Study in New Zealand
A predictable, numbers-first path: stable post-study work rights, transparent visa rules, and a clear route to residency for skilled graduates. Here is what it actually costs and what it actually takes โ for 2026.
Why New Zealand
New Zealand has built its reputation on one thing parents care about most: predictability. While other destinations tighten rules every year, New Zealand has kept a stable post-study work framework and one of the clearest skills-based residency systems in the world. For a student weighing real outcomes โ not just admission โ that stability is the headline.
The trade-off is that New Zealand is genuinely skills-based. Being allowed to work after graduation is not the same as qualifying for residency. The qualification level you choose โ and whether your occupation is classified as skilled โ decides how achievable the PR pathway is. A Level 7 bachelor's degree opens far more doors than a short Level 4โ6 certificate. We are specific about this so students choose the programme that actually leads somewhere.
What it costs
The number families repeat is the NZD 20,000 per year living-cost requirement โ but that is living costs only. Your real "show money" at application is first-year tuition (around NZD 22,000โ28,000 for a diploma) plus that NZD 20,000 living, plus about NZD 2,000 travel. For a typical diploma that lands near NZD 44,000โ50,000 โ before you think about the second year. University degrees cost more.
From study to residency
After graduation, eligible students get a post-study open work visa โ up to 3 years for a university Level 7+ qualification. From there, two pathways lead to residence: the Skilled Migrant Category (a 160-point system rewarding skilled employment, your NZ qualification, age and work experience) and the Green List, which fast-tracks residence for critical-shortage occupations such as nursing, IT, engineering, and teaching. Choose an occupation on these lists from day one, and the residency timeline after graduation can be as short as two years.
