How to read these numbers
These are monthly living figures — accommodation, food, transport, phone, day-to-day costs. Tuition is separate and is listed further down. Insurance, your flight, and the cost of setting up a room in your first month are separate again.
Two things Nepali families consistently under-budget:
The first month is not a normal month. Rental bonds, letting fees, a bed, bedding, kitchen basics, a SIM, a winter jacket — these land in weeks one to four. Plan for your first month to cost noticeably more than the monthly figure above.
The figure is a city average, not your rent. A room in a shared flat forty minutes from campus and a studio next to campus are not the same budget. If you accept the first accommodation offer the university sends because it is easy, you are usually choosing the expensive end of the range.
City cost versus tuition: look at both together
A cheaper city does not automatically mean a cheaper institution, and an expensive city does not always mean an expensive one. Compare them as a pair.

Three catches in that table.
"Per 120 points" is not the same as "per year." Auckland, Canterbury and Victoria publish their fees against a points load. If you enrol in more or fewer points than the published load, your bill changes. Ask the institution what your specific programme costs for your specific enrolment before you plan.
AUT's $1,260 levy sits on top of the $38,700. Levies and course-related costs are real money and they are not always in the headline number.
Otago Polytechnic's $23,400 is shown with a scholarship already applied. Confirm you actually qualify for that scholarship before you build a budget around the lower figure — assume the higher number until the offer letter says otherwise.
Fees for Toi Ohomai, Yoobee and ATMC NZ are not confirmed in our data. Check their official pages directly rather than relying on a counsellor's recollection.
If your spouse or children are coming
Living costs do not double when a partner joins you, but they do rise. These are the multipliers we apply to the city monthly figure above, and the accompanying funds amounts.

The hidden cost nobody budgets for: retaking your English test
Every repeated IELTS or PTE sitting is money out of your parents' pocket, plus weeks of delay. Most of those repeats are avoidable. The rules that catch Nepali applicants most often:
- Ara does not accept a Medium of Instruction letter. Their wording is direct: "We do not accept Medium of English as evidence." If your plan was to send your college's English-medium letter instead of a test score, that plan fails at Ara.
- AUT refuses IELTS Academic Online and PTE Academic Online. It is stated on every level page. Sit the test in a centre.
- Toi Ohomai refuses home-based online versions of PTE Academic Online and IELTS Online. Otago Polytechnic requires every test to be taken in an approved examination centre. University of Waikato College does not accept PTE Academic Online.
- Waikato accepts centre-administered computer tests but excludes PTE Online — which matters for Bachelor of Nursing and the clinical masters.
- Massey accepts Academic IELTS only. General IELTS is not accepted. SIT is the exception — it accepts General IELTS at certificate level, and it is the only institution here that does.
- TOEFL MyBest scores are not accepted at UC, Otago or Yoobee. One test date, one report.
Book the right test, in a centre, in one sitting. That single decision saves more money than any accommodation hack.
