Massey University Fees for International Students: Nepal
Massey University's published international fee is $38,080. See campus living costs, funds for a partner or child, English bands and the catches.
The short answer
Massey University's published international tuition figure is $38,080, listed on Massey's own fees page for international students (massey.ac.nz). That single number is the headline; what you actually pay depends on the programme you are accepted into, and what you have to show before you get a visa is tuition plus living costs, not tuition alone.
Massey teaches across Auckland, Manawatū (Palmerston North) and Wellington, so two students paying the same tuition can face very different living costs depending on which campus their programme is taught at. That is the part most families in Nepal get wrong when they budget.
What the $38,080 figure does and does not tell you
Treat it as a starting reference, not a quotation for your offer letter.
- Check the unit on the official page. Fees in New Zealand are published in different ways depending on the qualification and how many points you enrol in. Read the fee against your exact programme on the Massey fees page before you show any number to a bank or to your parents.
- Your offer letter is the only number that counts. Not a consultancy's spreadsheet, not a figure from a senior who went two years ago. Fees are set per intake.
- Tuition is not the whole cost. Living costs, the student visa funds requirement, insurance, airfare and set-up costs sit on top. Do not add them into one number in your head — list them separately so you can see which one you have underestimated.
| Institution | Campuses | Published international fee | Official page |

Living costs differ sharply by Massey campus
This is the sentence worth remembering: the tuition is the same document, the living cost is not.
| City | Monthly living cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland | NZ$3,662 | Highest in NZ; UoA/AUT/Massey area |
| Wellington | NZ$3,200 | VUW area; expensive but compact |
| Palmerston North | NZ$2,500 | Massey HQ |
If your programme is offered in Manawatū and also in Auckland, the campus you choose changes your monthly outgoing significantly. Palmerston North is where Massey's main campus sits and the monthly figure there is NZ$2,500 against NZ$3,662 in Auckland. Students choose Auckland for part-time work and community, then find the rent has eaten the difference. Decide with the numbers in front of you, not on reputation.

Funds you need to show, by family situation
The funds line is separate from tuition and separate from living costs. Below are the figures our spine carries for a student visa application, by family situation. The living-cost multiplier column is a planning factor applied to the monthly city figure above — work it out on paper yourself, and confirm the official requirement and the period it must cover with Immigration New Zealand before you lodge.
| Situation | Living-cost multiplier | Student funds | Partner | Children |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single student | 1 | NZ$20,000 | — | — |
| Couple (no kids) | 1.5 | NZ$20,000 | NZ$7,400 | — |
| Couple + 1 child | 1.7 | NZ$20,000 | NZ$7,400 | NZ$3,200 |
| Couple + 2 kids | 1.9 | NZ$20,000 | NZ$7,400 | NZ$6,400 |
The catch families in Nepal hit most often is not the amount — it is the evidence. A balance that appeared in the account three days before submission, with no explanation of where it came from, creates a problem that the amount itself does not solve. Sponsorship letters, loan sanction letters and property valuations all need to line up with the same story.
English requirements at Massey
Massey's standard bars are modest. The programme-specific ones are not, and they are the reason otherwise strong applicants get held up.

Accepted alternatives and the rules around them
- NZCEL Level 4 Academic (undergraduate), Level 5 (postgraduate), Level 3 (foundation).
- TOEFL iBT 80 with Writing 19 (UG) / 90 with Writing 20 (PG).
- PTE 50 (UG) / 58 (PG). Duolingo 105 (UG) / 120 (PG).
- One-skill retake accepted within 90 days.
- "Academic IELTS online" is listed at identical scores and is explicitly accepted.
The mistake that costs a whole intake: Massey accepts Academic IELTS only. General IELTS is not accepted. Every year students in Nepal sit General Training because a test centre had an earlier date, then have to book again and miss the intake. Check the test type on your booking, not after your TRF arrives.
If your IELTS is short
Massey University College publishes its own entry levels: Foundation Certificate (International) 5.5 with all bands 5.0+, Foundation Accelerated 6.0 with all bands 5.5+, Diploma (Business) 5.5/5.0, Graduate Diploma 6.0 with all bands 5.5+, and the Pre-Master's Pathway CoP at 6.0 with all bands 5.5+ (college.massey.ac.nz). Internal English testing is available free of charge for Massey University College programmes. Whether a particular pathway fits your academic background is a question for the College and your counsellor.
One more warning that applies beyond Massey: a Medium of Instruction letter from your Nepali college is not universally accepted. Ara states plainly, "We do not accept Medium of English as evidence" (ara.ac.nz). Never assume an MOI letter replaces a test.

Common questions
How much is Massey University tuition for a Nepali student?
Massey's published international tuition figure is $38,080, shown on its fees page for international students. Your actual fee is set by the programme you are accepted into and appears on your offer letter. Check the fee against your specific qualification on the official page rather than relying on a general figure.
Is it cheaper to study at Massey's Manawatū campus than in Auckland?
Tuition is published by programme, not by city, but living costs differ. Palmerston North is listed at NZ$2,500 a month and Auckland at NZ$3,662 a month. If your programme runs at more than one campus, that monthly gap is worth calculating for yourself before you accept an offer.
Does Massey accept General IELTS?
No. Massey accepts Academic IELTS only; General IELTS is not accepted. Academic IELTS taken online is listed at identical scores and is explicitly accepted, and a one-skill retake is accepted within 90 days.
How much money do I need to show for a New Zealand student visa?
The funds figure carried for a single student is NZ$20,000, with NZ$7,400 for a partner, NZ$3,200 for one child and NZ$6,400 for two children. These sit on top of tuition and are assessed alongside your living-cost evidence. Confirm the current requirement and the acceptable evidence directly with Immigration New Zealand before you apply.
