University of Otago Fees for International Students
University of Otago international tuition is $42,840–$46,200 a year by major. Dunedin living costs, English scores and funds planning for Nepali students.
The short answer
The University of Otago publishes international tuition of $42,840–$46,200 per year, by major (official fees page). Where you land inside that band depends on which subject you enrol in, not on your nationality — a Commerce degree and a laboratory-based science degree are not priced the same.
Tuition is only one of the two numbers a Nepali family has to plan for. The second is living cost in Dunedin, which our cost spine records at $2,500 per month. Keep the two numbers separate on your worksheet. Do not add them into one figure in your head and then quote that figure to anyone — different institutions and different processes ask for tuition and living funds in different ways, and a merged number is the fastest way to confuse your own file.
Figures below are quoted exactly as supplied. Always confirm the currency, the academic year and the exact programme code on the official page before you transfer money from Nepal.

Why the range matters more than the midpoint
Students and agents both have a habit of quoting "roughly forty-something thousand". That helps nobody. When you pick your programme, open the fees page, find your exact degree, and write down the figure printed against it. Two applicants from the same college in Kathmandu can sit in the same lecture theatre in first year and pay different annual tuition, because their majors sit at different points in the published band.
Also note the unit: per year, not per course. A three-year bachelor's degree is charged year by year, and the published figure is the annual one. Do not multiply it yourself for a financial plan and then treat that product as an official total — use the university's own total-cost statement for your programme, or run it through the free Master Reckoner, which matches course, cost, entry and English in one place.
Living costs: Dunedin against the rest of New Zealand
Dunedin is a student town, and the monthly figure reflects that. Here is how it sits against the other New Zealand study cities in our spine, so you can see what you would be paying if you chose a different campus.
| City | Monthly living cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland | $3,662 | Highest in NZ; UoA/AUT/Massey area |
| Wellington | $3,200 | VUW area; expensive but compact |
| Christchurch | $2,800 | UC area; mid-range |
| Hamilton | $2,700 | Waikato/Wintec area |
| Dunedin | $2,500 | Otago; affordable student town |
| Palmerston North | $2,500 | Massey HQ |
| Lincoln | $2,500 | Lincoln Uni village |
| Tauranga | $2,300 | Toi Ohomai region |
| Hawke's Bay | $2,300 | EIT region |
| Invercargill | $1,950 | SIT — cheapest in NZ |
The catch counsellors see most often: families compare tuition between universities and ignore the city line. The monthly difference between Auckland at $3,662 and Dunedin at $2,500 runs for every month you are in the country, not just the first one. That gap belongs in the comparison. Do the arithmetic on paper with your own family's numbers rather than accepting a single "total cost" figure from anyone.

Planning funds by family situation
If you are applying with a spouse or children, the living-cost figure is not the one you plan against on its own. Our spine applies a multiplier to the city figure and records separate visa-related figures per family member. These are shown below as supplied — the multipliers are not multiplied out here on purpose.
| Family situation | Living-cost multiplier | Student visa figure | Partner figure | Child figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single student | 1 | 20,000 | 0 | 0 |
| Couple (no kids) | 1.5 | 20,000 | 7,400 | 0 |
| Couple + 1 child | 1.7 | 20,000 | 7,400 | 3,200 |
| Couple + 2 kids | 1.9 | 20,000 | 7,400 | 6,400 |
Apply the multiplier to the Dunedin monthly figure yourself, or let the Master Reckoner do it for your exact family shape. Always cross-check the current official requirement on the relevant New Zealand government page before you arrange funds — the figures above are planning inputs, not a substitute for the official requirement on the day you apply.
English requirements for Otago
Fees are pointless if your English score blocks the offer. Otago's published requirements:
| Level or programme | IELTS requirement |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate (general) | 6.0, no band below 5.5 |
| Postgraduate (general) | 6.5, no band below 6.0 |
| Law (LLM, PhD) | 7.5 overall with minimum 7.0 in each band |
| Dentistry (advanced-standing BDS and clinical PG) | Minimum 7.0 in every band |
| Social Work (BSW and MSCW(Applied)) | 7.0, all bands 7.0 |
| Teaching | Per Teaching Council |

The details that cause rejections
- Law at Otago is 7.5 overall with a minimum of 7.0 in each band. That is the highest English bar among the New Zealand institutions we track. Students who assume "postgraduate means 6.5" waste a test sitting.
- TOEFL MyBest scores are not accepted. One test date, one report.
- IELTS Online is explicitly accepted at Otago. That is not true everywhere — several New Zealand providers refuse home-based online tests outright — so do not assume a test format accepted at one institution transfers to your backup application.
- Other accepted tests: NZCEL 4/5 Academic; TOEFL 80 (Writing 20) for undergraduate and 90 for postgraduate; PTE 50/58; Duolingo 105/120.
- English for Otago (EFO) pathway: 6.0 for undergraduate entry, 6.5 for postgraduate.
- Validity: 2 years, extendable to 5 case-by-case with evidence of immersion. Check the date on your TRF against your intended start date, not your application date.
Do not confuse Otago with Otago Polytechnic
They are different institutions in the same city. Otago Polytechnic's published English requirements are 6.0 with no band below 5.5 for undergraduate and 6.5 with no band below 6.0 for master's, with Bachelor of Nursing at 6.5 and the Health Bridging Certificate at 5.5/5.0. Its policy requires all English tests to be taken in an approved, authorised or registered examination centre — the basis for refusing at-home and online tests. If someone sends you "Otago fees" for a polytechnic programme, they are not the university figures above.
Common questions
How much is one year at the University of Otago for a Nepali student?
Published international tuition is $42,840–$46,200 per year, depending on your major, and the Dunedin living-cost figure is $2,500 per month. Keep those two lines separate in your budget and confirm your programme's exact annual tuition on the official fees page. Insurance, travel and one-off setup costs sit outside both figures.
Is Dunedin cheaper than Auckland for a student?
On the monthly living-cost figures, Dunedin is $2,500 and Auckland is $3,662. That difference applies every month of your stay, so it usually matters more than a small tuition difference between two universities. Compare the city line and the tuition line separately before deciding.
What IELTS score do I need for Otago?
Undergraduate entry is 6.0 with no band below 5.5, and postgraduate entry is 6.5 with no band below 6.0. Some programmes are much higher: Law (LLM, PhD) requires 7.5 overall with a minimum of 7.0 in each band, and Social Work requires 7.0 with all bands at 7.0. Check your specific programme before booking a test.
Does Otago accept an online English test?
Otago explicitly accepts IELTS Online, but does not accept TOEFL MyBest scores. Other institutions in New Zealand take a stricter line on home-based online testing, so if you are applying to more than one place, check each one's page separately. More comparisons are in our guides.
