New Zealand Post-Study Work Visa and Residency for Nepali Graduates: The 2026 Guide

How Nepali use New Zealand's post-study work visa to build residency β€” SMC points, Green List, ANZSCO levels, and why qualification level changes everything

Students rarely ask this question in the counselling session. By the time they are asking it β€” three years later, graduation letter in hand β€” they either feel relieved that the answer is good, or blindsided that their programme does not qualify them for what they thought it would.

New Zealand has one of the clearest post-study work pathways in the world. It also has one of the strictest residency skills filters. Understanding the difference between being allowed to work and being able to qualify for residency is the most important thing a Nepali student can know before picking a programme.

Here is how it actually works in 2026.

The Post-Study Open Work Visa

After graduation, eligible New Zealand graduates can apply for a Post-Study Open Work Visa. "Open" means no employer-specific restriction: you can work for any employer, in any role, while you build your career and, if you qualify, your residency pathway.

The duration depends on what you studied and where:

Programme Duration
Less than 30 weeks Not eligible
30 weeks to under 2 years, Level 4–6 (certificates, diplomas) 1 year
2+ years, Level 7 or above at a New Zealand university 3 years
2+ years, Level 7 or above at a polytechnic or PTE 2 years
Postgraduate / Master's (1+ year) 3 years
PhD 3 years

For most Nepali students β€” a two-year diploma at a polytechnic like Ara, Toi Ohomai, or Whitireia β€” the post-study visa comes out at 2 years. For those completing a bachelor's at a university, it is 3 years. For a Level 4–6 certificate or diploma under two years, it is only 1 year β€” a timeline that is very hard to convert into residency.

Work rights during study

While enrolled, your student visa allows:

  • 20 hours per week during the academic semester
  • Full-time during scheduled breaks (semester holidays, trimester breaks)

A practical note: New Zealand employers are generally open to international students, and building relevant work experience during your degree improves both your post-graduation job prospects and your residency points. Students who wait until graduation to start looking for skilled-level work are at a measurable disadvantage in the residency timeline.

From post-study work to residency: two main paths

Having a post-study work visa is not the same as qualifying for residency. New Zealand's residency pathways are skills-based β€” and the route you take depends on your occupation, qualification level, and whether you land a job in an area of skill shortage.

Path 1: Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)

The Skilled Migrant Category is New Zealand's primary points-tested permanent residency pathway. The three requirements:

1. Skilled employment. Your job must qualify as a skilled occupation under INZ's classification β€” broadly, ANZSCO Level 1, 2, or 3 (manager, professional, or technician/associate professional). Most roles in IT, healthcare, engineering, accounting, and education qualify. General retail, hospitality service, and warehouse roles do not.

2. 160 points on the SMC scale. The main point sources:

Factor Points
Skilled job offer or employment in NZ 50
Job in area of absolute skill shortage +10
NZ work experience β€” each skilled year +10 per year
NZ qualification, Level 7 or above (bachelor's+) +50
Age 20–39 +30
Partner with skilled NZ employment +20
Close family member who is NZ citizen or resident +10

A typical scenario for a Nepali graduate: 2-year polytechnic diploma (Level 6), skilled job offer in IT, 1 year of NZ work experience β†’ 50 + 10 + 30 = 90 points. Does not reach 160.

Add a Level 7 bachelor's degree from a NZ university: +50 β†’ 140 points. Still short.

Add a second year of skilled NZ work: +10 β†’ 150 points. Close.

Add a job in an area of skill shortage: +10 β†’ 160 points. Eligible.

The implication: a Level 7 or above qualification is almost always necessary to reach 160 points without an unusually strong combination of factors. Level 4–6 graduates face a much steeper climb.

3. Health and character β€” standard INZ requirements.

Path 2: Green List and Employer-Assisted Residency

INZ's Green List is a fast-track for occupations in critical shortage. It has two tiers:

  • Tier 1 (Straight to Residence): Certain roles β€” specialist doctors, dentists, midwives, some nurses, secondary school teachers, and selected engineers β€” can apply for residence directly without first securing a work visa, even from overseas. Requires a job offer and a relevant qualification.

  • Tier 2 (Residence from Employment): A broader range of skilled occupations β€” including many IT roles, general nursing, early childhood teachers, and construction trades β€” can apply for residence after 2 years of skilled employment in NZ through an accredited employer.

The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) is the work visa that feeds the Tier 2 residence pathway. If you secure a job with an INZ-accredited employer and work in a Tier 2 occupation for 2 years, your employer can support your residence application β€” or you can transition to SMC independently if you have the points.

For Nepali students: if your programme leads into a Green List occupation and you secure employment with an accredited employer, the residency timeline after graduation can be as short as 2 years.

Two paths to NZ residency β€” SMC and Green List

The qualification level that changes everything

Level 7 (bachelor's degree or above) is the single biggest variable in the NZ post-study path:

  • Level 7+ graduates from a university get a 3-year post-study work visa; from a polytechnic, 2 years.
  • Level 7+ qualifications earn +50 SMC points β€” often the points that close the gap to 160.
  • Green List Tier 1 direct residence typically requires a relevant Level 7+ qualification.
  • Level 4–6 graduates get a 1-year post-study work visa and do not earn the NZ qualification bonus.

A student deciding between a 2-year diploma and a 3-year bachelor's at the same institution is not just choosing between fees and duration. They are choosing meaningfully different post-study work and residency options. Be specific about this.

Occupations that lead somewhere β€” and ones that do not

Not all programmes map to skilled occupations under ANZSCO. Common patterns for Nepali students:

Programme area ANZSCO level SMC / Green List eligible?
Nursing β€” Bachelor of Nursing Level 1 Yes β€” Green List Tier 1 (Straight to Residence)
Information Technology Level 2 Yes β€” many roles on Green List Tier 2
Engineering (Level 7+) Level 1–2 Yes
Accounting / Finance Level 1–2 Yes
Early Childhood Education Level 2 Yes β€” Green List Tier 2
Business Administration (Level 7+) Level 2–3 Generally yes, depends on specific role
Cookery / Hospitality Operations ANZSCO Level 5–6 No β€” not classified as skilled occupation for SMC
Beauty Therapy ANZSCO Level 5 Generally no

The hard truth about cookery and hospitality certificates: they are accessible, they are not expensive, and the roles they lead to are not counted as skilled employment for SMC or the Green List. A Level 7 Hospitality Management degree is a different matter β€” but a Level 4 cookery certificate is not. Counsellors who are not clear about this distinction create very disappointed clients two years after graduation.

A realistic timeline for a Nepali graduate

Say a student completes a 2-year Bachelor of IT at the University of Auckland and secures a developer role at an accredited employer:

  • Graduate β†’ apply for 3-year Post-Study Open Work Visa
  • Year 1: Working in ANZSCO Level 2 IT role (+50 SMC job offer, +30 age, +50 NZ qualification = 130 points)
  • Year 2: Add 2 years of NZ skilled work experience (+20 points) β†’ 150 points
  • Year 2.5: Job classified as area of absolute skill shortage in IT β†’ +10 β†’ 160 points, SMC eligible
  • Or: employer accreditation triggers Green List Tier 2 residence application directly

A clear path. The same student doing a 1-year Level 5 certificate in cookery has a 1-year post-study visa and 0 SMC points from their qualification β€” that is a fundamentally different conversation.

6-point check for the post-study path

  1. Is your programme Level 7 or above β€” or have you made peace with a 1-year post-study window if it is not?
  2. Does your intended occupation map to ANZSCO Level 1, 2, or 3?
  3. Is your target occupation on INZ's Green List (Tier 1 or 2)?
  4. Can you realistically reach 160 SMC points β€” have you calculated your score with qualification, age, and expected work experience?
  5. Does your plan assume partner work rights? Check whether your programme type and duration entitles your partner to a work visa.
  6. Does your financial plan account for the time between graduation and finding a skilled-level job?

Six yeses means you understand what you are choosing and why. Gaps here are better discovered now than after two years of working in roles that do not count toward residency.

The honest part

New Zealand immigration settings have shifted considerably since 2022 β€” the Green List, AEWV, and SMC points scale have all been revised. The framework above is accurate as of June 2026. Always verify the current Green List occupations, SMC points scale, and ANZSCO classification for your specific occupation on the official INZ website before advising a family. New Zealand is one of the most achievable residency pathways for skilled Nepali graduates β€” but it rewards students who planned the occupation from day one, not just the programme name.
