University of Canterbury Fees for International Students
University of Canterbury tuition is published as $39,590 /120pt. See UC fees, Christchurch living costs and IELTS bars, explained for Nepali students.
The short answer
The University of Canterbury publishes its international tuition as $39,590 /120pt — that is, per 120 points of study, not as a flat annual lump sum (UC international tuition fees). On top of tuition you have to fund living costs in Christchurch, which our data set puts at NZ$2,800 a month.
Those are two separate numbers and they stay separate. Do not let an agent hand you one "total package" figure without showing you which part is tuition, which part is living, and which part is the funds you must show for your visa application.
How UC quotes the fee, and why the unit matters
UC's figure is $39,590 /120pt. It is tied to a points load, not to a calendar year and not to a whole degree.
That matters for three reasons:
- Different degrees and different course selections carry different point loads. Before you budget, open your programme on UC's fee page and check how many points your intended courses actually carry.
- The fee is per 120 points, so a longer degree means the fee applies again to the next block of points. A three-year bachelor's is not billed once.
- Student services levies, insurance and course-related material costs sit outside the tuition figure. We do not hold verified figures for those, so we will not quote any. Ask UC's fees page and get the answer in writing before you pay a deposit.
| Item | Published figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| UC international tuition | $39,590 /120pt | canterbury.ac.nz — international tuition fees |
| Christchurch living cost | NZ$2,800 per month | StudyLink Nepal cost data (UC area; mid-range) |
We have deliberately not added those two together. A monthly living figure and a per-120-point tuition figure are different units, and combining them is where most "estimated total cost" numbers on agent websites go wrong.
Christchurch living costs against other New Zealand cities
Christchurch sits in the middle of the New Zealand range. If cost is the deciding factor, compare before you commit — the city you choose can move your monthly budget more than a scholarship would.
| City | Monthly living cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland | NZ$3,662 | Highest in NZ; UoA/AUT/Massey area |
| Wellington | NZ$3,200 | VUW area; expensive but compact |
| Christchurch | NZ$2,800 | UC area; mid-range |
| Hamilton | NZ$2,700 | Waikato/Wintec area |
| Dunedin | NZ$2,500 | Otago; affordable student town |
| Palmerston North | NZ$2,500 | Massey HQ |
| Lincoln | NZ$2,500 | Lincoln Uni village |
| Tauranga | NZ$2,300 | Toi Ohomai region |
| Hawke's Bay | NZ$2,300 | EIT region |
| Invercargill | NZ$1,950 | SIT — cheapest in NZ |
Read that table as a list, not as a subtraction. Christchurch is NZ$2,800 a month and Auckland is NZ$3,662 a month; work out the difference for your own case with your own family's numbers. Our free Master Reckoner does that comparison for you against your actual course and intake.
Funds figures if you are coming with family
Bringing a spouse or children changes both your living budget and the funds you have to show. These are the figures our planner uses:
| Household | Living-cost multiplier | Student funds | Partner funds | Child funds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single student | 1 | NZ$20,000 | — | — |
| Couple (no kids) | 1.5 | NZ$20,000 | NZ$7,400 | — |
| Couple + 1 child | 1.7 | NZ$20,000 | NZ$7,400 | NZ$3,200 |
| Couple + 2 kids | 1.9 | NZ$20,000 | NZ$7,400 | NZ$6,400 |
Again — we have not multiplied the Christchurch NZ$2,800 by any of those multipliers here, and you should be suspicious of any counsellor who quotes you a single confident "total" without showing the working. Check the current official New Zealand government requirement for funds before you prepare bank documents, because the figure that gets checked at the time you apply is the one that counts, not the one on a blog post.
English requirements at UC
Fees are only half the question. Every year Nepali applicants pay for a test, hit the overall score, and are still refused because one band fell short.
| Level at UC | IELTS requirement |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate | 6.0, minimum 5.5 in each band |
| Postgraduate | 6.5, minimum 6.0 in each band |
| Teaching qualifications | 7.0, with 7.0 in Reading, Writing and Speaking |
| MSLP (Speech & Language Pathology) | 7.0, no score below 6.5 |
| Foundation Certificate / DipUniSt | 5.5, no band below 5.0 |

The catches worth knowing
- The band minimum, not the overall, is what fails people. An undergraduate applicant with 6.0 overall but 5.0 in Writing does not meet UC's 6.0 with minimum 5.5 in each band. Retake before you apply, not after a conditional offer forces it.
- TOEFL iBT MyBest scores are not accepted at UC. It must be a single test date. If you have been stitching together your best sections across sittings, that will not work here.
- IELTS Online is accepted at UC, and explicitly so at foundation level. That is not true everywhere in New Zealand, so do not assume the test you booked for one university transfers to another.
- UC's Bachelor of Social Work (Hons) uses the standard 6.0 with 5.5 in each band — it is not 7.0. Some agents quote a 7.0 social work bar from other institutions. At UC that is wrong, and it has pushed students into unnecessary retakes.
If your IELTS is short
UC accepts NZCEL Level 4 Academic for undergraduate entry, NZCEL Level 5 for postgraduate, and NZCEL Level 3 Applied for foundation. PTE is 50 for undergraduate and 58 for postgraduate; for teaching it is 69, with Listening 61, Reading 62, Writing 73 and Speaking 79. Duolingo is 105 for undergraduate and 120 for postgraduate.
Planning your UC budget properly
- Confirm the point load of your specific programme against the $39,590 /120pt figure on UC's own fee page. Screenshot it with the date you viewed it.
- Budget Christchurch living costs at NZ$2,800 a month and multiply by the number of months you will actually be there, including the weeks before semester starts.
- Check the funds figure for your household type against the current official requirement before you arrange bank statements or an education loan.
- Fix your English test strategy before you pay for a test — band minimums, and the fact that UC will not take TOEFL MyBest.

Common questions
How much is one year at the University of Canterbury for a Nepali student?
UC does not publish a single flat annual tuition number for international students — it publishes $39,590 /120pt. To turn that into your own annual figure you need the point load of the courses you will actually enrol in, which is on UC's fee page. Separately, budget Christchurch living costs at NZ$2,800 a month.
Is Christchurch cheaper than Auckland for a student?
Our data puts Christchurch at NZ$2,800 a month and Auckland at NZ$3,662 a month. Christchurch is described as mid-range for New Zealand, while Auckland is the highest in the country. Dunedin at NZ$2,500 and Invercargill at NZ$1,950 are lower again, so if budget is the main constraint, look at the whole table rather than just the two biggest names.
Is IELTS 6.0 enough for the University of Canterbury?
For undergraduate entry, UC asks for 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each band — so 6.0 overall with a 5.0 in any single band is not enough. Postgraduate entry is 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each band. Teaching qualifications sit at 7.0 with 7.0 in Reading, Writing and Speaking, and MSLP is 7.0 with no score below 6.5.
Does UC accept my TOEFL MyBest score?
No. UC does not accept TOEFL iBT MyBest scores — it requires a single test date. If your plan was to combine strong sections from different sittings, change that plan before you book, and check UC's English language requirements page directly.
