Victoria University of Wellington Fees: International 2026
VUW's 2026 international tuition is NZ$37,546 at a 120-point load. Wellington living costs, IELTS scores and funds figures for Nepali students.
The short answer
Victoria University of Wellington publishes an international tuition figure of NZ$37,546 (2026, 120pt) — that is, the fee quoted against a 120-point study load (VUW international fees). On top of that sits Wellington living cost, which our planning data puts at NZ$3,200 per month, and the funds figure you will need to show separately from tuition.
Those are two different numbers and they stay two different numbers. Do not let an agent hand you one combined "total package" figure — ask which part is tuition, which part is living, and which part is the visa funds evidence. Families who only budget for tuition are the ones who run short in second semester.
What the tuition figure does and does not include
| Item | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| VUW international tuition, 2026 | $37,546 (2026, 120pt) | wgtn.ac.nz fees |
| Wellington living cost | NZ$3,200 per month | StudyLink Nepal cost data |
Three things to check before you treat NZ$37,546 as your number:
- It is quoted at 120 points. If your programme or your enrolment is a different point load, your invoice will not match. Confirm your own course's point load and fee on the official fees page.
- Fees differ by subject. Science, engineering, commerce and arts are not priced identically at any New Zealand university. The published display figure is a starting point for planning, not a quote for your programme.
- It is a tuition figure only. Student services levies, insurance, materials and accommodation are handled separately. Ask VUW's fees page for your programme's breakdown rather than assuming.

Living in Wellington, and what the other cities cost
Wellington is expensive but compact. You can often live without a car, which is not true everywhere in New Zealand. Here is how the monthly living cost we use compares across the main study cities:
| City | Monthly living cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland | NZ$3,662 | Highest in NZ; UoA/AUT/Massey area |
| Wellington | NZ$3,200 | VUW area; expensive but compact |
| Christchurch | NZ$2,800 | UC area; mid-range |
| Hamilton | NZ$2,700 | Waikato/Wintec area |
| Dunedin | NZ$2,500 | Otago; affordable student town |
| Palmerston North | NZ$2,500 | Massey HQ |
| Lincoln | NZ$2,500 | Lincoln Uni village |
| Tauranga | NZ$2,300 | Toi Ohomai region |
| Hawke's Bay | NZ$2,300 | EIT region |
| Invercargill | NZ$1,950 | SIT — cheapest in NZ |
Read that table before you decide that Wellington is the only option. A Nepali student choosing between VUW and a South Island institution is choosing between two very different monthly burn rates, and the monthly number matters more over three years than most families expect. Funds and family: the figures our planner uses
Tuition is what the university invoices. Funds evidence is separate, and it is the part where applications come apart.
| Situation | Living cost factor | Funds figure | Partner visa | Child visa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single student | 1 | NZ$20,000 | — | — |
| Couple (no kids) | 1.5 | NZ$20,000 | NZ$7,400 | — |
| Couple + 1 child | 1.7 | NZ$20,000 | NZ$7,400 | NZ$3,200 |
| Couple + 2 kids | 1.9 | NZ$20,000 | NZ$7,400 | NZ$6,400 |
The living cost factor is a multiplier we apply to the city monthly figure when a partner or children travel with you — a couple is planned at 1.5 times the single figure, not at the same figure. Work your own total out on paper, or let the Master Reckoner do it, and always confirm the current official requirement before you lodge anything.
The catch worth stating plainly: the published funds figure is the floor, and a bank statement that meets the floor only because money landed last week is the weakest document in your file. Source, history and the relationship of the sponsor to you are what get scrutinised. Genuine, traceable, seasoned funds beat a large last-minute deposit every time.
English requirements at VUW
VUW's standard entry is straightforward:
- Undergraduate: IELTS 6.0, no band below 5.5
- Postgraduate: IELTS 6.5, no band below 6.0
VUW also accepts NZCEL 4/5 (Academic), TOEFL 80 for undergraduate and 90 for postgraduate (Writing 20), PTE 50/58, and Duolingo 105 (no band below 95) for undergraduate and 120 (no band below 105) for postgraduate. For teaching programmes, the PTE requirement is 69. Importantly for students in Nepal who sat a remote test: IELTS Online and the One Skill Retake are explicitly accepted at VUW (VUW English language requirements).
One trap: CEFR B2 is accepted for Study Abroad and Exchange only — not for degree entry. If someone tells you a B2 certificate will get you into a VUW degree, they are wrong.
The programmes where 6.5 is not enough
These requirements are set externally and cannot be waived by the university, no matter how strong your academics are:
| VUW programme | English requirement |
|---|---|
| Bachelor of Midwifery | 7.0 (Listening & Speaking 7.0, Reading & Writing 6.5) |
| BEd(Tchg) ECE, GradDipTchg, MTchgLn | 7.0, all bands 7.0 |
| Master of Nursing Practice | 7.0, all bands 7.0 |
| LLM | 7.0 / 6.5 |
| PhD Law | 7.0 (Writing 7.0) |
| PhD Linguistics | 7.0 / 6.5 |
Note the midwifery asymmetry: the two bands people usually score lowest on, Listening and Speaking, are the two set at 7.0. Students who train generically for "overall 7.0" fail this requirement while technically hitting the overall. Train for the specific bands the programme names.
How VUW compares with other New Zealand institutions
| Institution | Standard UG | Standard PG | Remote-test position |
|---|---|---|---|
| VUW | 6.0, no band below 5.5 | 6.5, no band below 6.0 | IELTS Online and One Skill Retake accepted |
| UC | 6.0, min 5.5 each band | 6.5, min 6.0 each band | IELTS Online accepted; TOEFL MyBest not accepted |
| Otago | 6.0, no band below 5.5 | 6.5, no band below 6.0 | IELTS Online accepted; TOEFL MyBest not accepted |
| Massey | 6.0, min 5.5 each band | 6.5, min 6.0 each band | Academic IELTS online accepted; General IELTS not accepted |
| AUT | 6.0, all bands 5.5+ | Master's 6.5, all 6.0+ | Refuses IELTS Academic Online and PTE Academic Online |
| Waikato | 6.0, no band below 5.5 | 6.5, no band below 6.0 | PTE Online refused for BNurs, MPSOCS, clinical masters |
Two warnings that catch Nepali applicants regularly. Ara states: "We do not accept Medium of English as evidence" — a Medium-of-Instruction letter from your Nepali college will not work there. Toi Ohomai states it does not accept home-based online versions of tests such as PTE Academic Online or IELTS Online. VUW's position is more generous, but do not assume the university you apply to second has the same policy.
Common questions
Is NZ$37,546 the fee for the whole degree or for one year?
It is the figure VUW publishes for international students for 2026, quoted against a 120-point study load — not a whole-degree price. Your actual invoice depends on your programme and how many points you enrol in. Check your own programme on the VUW fees page before you plan your borrowing.
How much should a Nepali family budget for living in Wellington?
Our planning figure for Wellington is NZ$3,200 per month for a single student. That sits below Auckland's NZ$3,662 and above Dunedin's NZ$2,500. Keep it separate from tuition in your budget spreadsheet, and scale it up if a partner or children are coming with you.
My IELTS was taken online. Will VUW accept it?
VUW explicitly accepts IELTS Online and the One Skill Retake. That is not true everywhere — AUT refuses IELTS Academic Online and PTE Academic Online, and Toi Ohomai refuses home-based versions of both. If you are applying to more than one institution, check each one's page rather than the one that said yes.
I have IELTS 6.5 overall. Can I apply for Master of Nursing Practice at VUW?
No. That programme requires 7.0 with all bands at 7.0, and the requirement is set externally and cannot be waived by the university. The same applies to BEd(Tchg) ECE, GradDipTchg and MTchgLn. Retake the test before you apply rather than hoping for discretion.
