Heriot-Watt Malaysia BSc Actuarial Science Fees for Nepalis

BSc (Hons) Actuarial Science at Heriot-Watt Malaysia costs RM 55,035/yr, RM 165,106 total. Fees, EMGS costs, funds and entry for Nepali students.

The short answer

BSc (Hons) Actuarial Science at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia is published at RM 55,035 per year for international students, which the university lists as RM 165,106 total for the three-year degree (hw.ac.uk/malaysia). Nepali students pay the international rate — there is no separate South Asian fee band — and the degree awarded is a Heriot-Watt UK degree, not a Malaysia-only qualification.

Two figures matter and they are not interchangeable. RM 55,035 is the per-year tuition you must be able to show and pay each year. RM 165,106 is the whole-course figure for three years. When a bank or an institution asks "how much is the course", check which of the two they mean before you answer.

BSc (Hons) Statistical Data Science Bachelor 3 yr RM 55,035/yr (RM 165,106 total) Jan · Sep

Foundation in Business Foundation 1 yr RM 36,252 total Jan · May · Jul · Sep
MBA (Edinburgh Business School) Master 1 yr FT / 2 yr PT RM 73,935 total Jan · Sep

All figures above are from the official institution pages. Actuarial Science is one of the two most expensive bachelor programmes on this list — do not budget from the Computing Science or Psychology number by mistake, which happens more often than you would think when families compare screenshots.

Two things to note about the award. Actuarial Science carries the Go Global transfer option to Edinburgh or Dubai, so part of the degree can be taken at another Heriot-Watt campus. If you use that route, the Malaysia fee no longer applies for the transferred period — ask the university in writing what the Edinburgh or Dubai year would cost before you plan around it. And the campus is in Putrajaya; the parent university sits at #325 in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (confirmed via QS/TopUniversities, Aug 2026).

What the fee does not cover

Tuition is the biggest line but not the only one. These are the published cost items you should list separately on your family's budget sheet — quote them side by side, do not merge them into one "total" number, because the institution and EMGS will ask for them separately.

Cost item Published figure Unit
Tuition, BSc (Hons) Actuarial Science RM 55,035 per year
Tuition, whole course RM 165,106 total, 3 years
EMGS / Student Pass, Year 1 RM 2,000 Year 1
Medical RM 275 one-off
Living-cost planning baseline (Malaysia) RM 24,000 per year
Planner tuition band, branch-campus bachelor RM 50,000 per year

The last row needs explaining. Our funds planner uses RM 50,000 per year as a generic branch-campus bachelor tuition band. Heriot-Watt's published Actuarial Science fee is RM 55,035 per year, which is higher than that generic band. Always plan from the published programme fee, not from a category average.

On funds, be honest with yourself about what is being tested. EMGS and Immigration publish no single statutory minimum funds figure for Malaysia. The planning estimate on this site is built from published Year-1 EMGS and medical costs plus a living-cost baseline. What actually gets checked is whether your financial proof — bank statements, fixed deposits, or a sponsor/scholarship letter — credibly covers tuition plus living for at least one year. Confirm the exact figure requested with Heriot-Watt Malaysia and EMGS at the time you apply.

Living costs in Putrajaya

Item Published range (Putrajaya)
Shared room RM 180–300 per month
Studio RM 300–500 per month
Total monthly budget RM 1,700–2,500 per month
Transport Good MRT/ERL connectivity plus Grab

On-campus residence for Putrajaya is listed as "verify" — meaning we have not seen an official published rate, so ask the university's accommodation office directly rather than accepting an agent's estimate. The most reliably published Malaysian accommodation quote is APU's residence in Kuala Lumpur at RM 1,120–1,390 per month, which is a different city and a different institution; use it only as a sense-check, not as your Putrajaya budget.

Malaysia's monthly living range sits far below London, Sydney or Toronto. That is the real reason a UK-branded degree works here for a Nepali family on a fixed budget. Compare destinations on the Master Reckoner before you commit to one country.

Entry and English

Heriot-Watt Malaysia publishes its own programme-specific requirements, and Actuarial Science is mathematics-heavy, so the maths grade in your Class 12 or A-Level result matters as much as the aggregate. Confirm the exact subject requirement on the official page.

For English, the safe planning targets across Malaysian institutions are: Foundation or Diploma, IELTS 5.5; Bachelor, IELTS 6.0–6.5; Master, IELTS 6.0–6.5. These are planning targets for admission and the Student Pass, not Heriot-Watt's published figure — get the published figure from the university before you book a test date.

Where students go wrong: assuming a Class 12 English mark alone will secure a waiver. At some institutions English-medium instruction plus a strong Class 12 or O-Level English result is frequently accepted, and the institution decides. At others the policy is strict and needs a recognised English-medium qualification or one to two years of tertiary study in English. If your score sits below target, most Malaysian institutions run an in-house intensive English programme that is recognised by EMGS for the Student Pass. That route costs time — plan for it in your intake choice, not after you have been deferred.

Visa, funds and documents

Budget 3–4 months end to end for Student Pass approval through EMGS once you have the offer letter. Start the day you accept. For Nepali applicants, document and financial verification tends to be more thorough, which is exactly why families who begin in month two miss a January intake and lose a year.

The document set:

  • Conditional or unconditional offer letter from an EMGS-approved institution
  • Passport valid at least 12–18 months beyond the intended study period
  • Attested academic transcripts and certificates for the qualification used for admission
  • English proficiency proof, or the institution's English-medium/waiver letter
  • Financial proof — bank statements, fixed deposits, or a sponsor/scholarship letter covering tuition plus living for at least one year
  • eVAL (electronic Visa Approval Letter), issued after EMGS approval
  • Single Entry Visa, applied for via the official eVISA portal using the eVAL, before travelling — this step applies to Nepal, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh nationals
  • Pre-departure medical, plus the mandatory post-arrival medical within 7 days of landing
  • Health insurance for the study period, usually bundled into the EMGS fee quote
  • Passport photographs to EMGS specification

The two items that cause the most last-minute panic are the passport validity window and the post-arrival medical. A passport with only a few months left will stall the file. And the post-arrival medical is not optional — it is within 7 days of landing.

Common questions

Is the Heriot-Watt Malaysia degree the same as the Edinburgh one?

Branch campuses award the same parent-university degree, from the same accreditation, as the home campus — the testamur does not say "Malaysia". Heriot-Watt Malaysia's BSc (Hons) Actuarial Science is listed as a Heriot-Watt UK degree with a Go Global transfer option to Edinburgh or Dubai. That answers recognition. It does not answer employer preference, which varies.

How much money do I need to show for the Student Pass?

There is no single published statutory minimum funds figure for Malaysia. What gets assessed is whether your bank statements, fixed deposits or sponsor letter credibly cover tuition plus living for at least one year. For this programme the published tuition is RM 55,035 per year, Year-1 EMGS is RM 2,000, medical is RM 275, and the living-cost planning baseline is RM 24,000 per year — list them separately and confirm the total expected with the university and EMGS.

Can I work part-time in Malaysia to pay the fees?

Part-time work is allowed up to 20 hours per week during scheduled breaks and holidays only — not during term — subject to Student Pass conditions and university approval. That means part-time earnings cannot be treated as a funding source for tuition. Show funds you actually have.

Can I stay and work in Malaysia after I graduate?

Malaysia does not offer a broad open post-study work visa of the kind Australia, New Zealand or Canada run. Staying means an employer sponsors an Employment Pass after a job offer, and from 1 June 2026 the EP salary floors make this harder for fresh graduates, because many entry-level jobs pay below the threshold. Treat Malaysia as a cost-effective foreign-brand degree and a stepping stone, not a stay-and-work route.
