University of Guelph Fees for International Students
What Nepali students pay at the University of Guelph: tuition range per year, English scores, living cost benchmarks and funds thresholds.
The short answer
International tuition at the University of Guelph is listed as $44,729–96,794/yr (by program) — the figure you pay depends entirely on which programme you are admitted to, not on your nationality (uoguelph.ca/admission). Living costs sit on top of that, and the funds you must show for a study permit are a separate number again.
That is the whole picture in three parts: tuition, living cost, funds shown. Nepali families go wrong when they treat one of those three as the total. Below, each one is given separately, with the official source, and I have deliberately not added them together for you — your programme, your city and your family size change the sum, and a counsellor adding numbers on your behalf is how a wrong figure ends up in a bank statement.
Tuition at the University of Guelph

Why the range is so wide
A range this wide is not a mistake and it is not a negotiation. Guelph teaches everything from arts and social science through to veterinary medicine, and lab-heavy and clinical programmes sit at the top of the band while classroom-based programmes sit at the bottom. The figure at the low end and the figure at the high end are both real prices paid by real students in the same intake.
So the single most useful thing you can do before you budget is fix your programme. Until you know the exact programme and degree level, any budget you build is a guess. Check the per-programme fee schedule on the university's own admission pages rather than relying on a number a friend quoted you from two intakes ago (uoguelph.ca/admission).
The catches worth knowing
- The figure is per year, not for the whole course. A four-year bachelor's degree is four of those payments, not one.
- Tuition is only one line on a university invoice. Compulsory ancillary fees, health insurance for international students, and residence or meal plans are billed separately by the institution. I have no official figure for those here, so do not assume they are small — pull them from your offer letter and your student account before you commit.
- Fees are set per academic year. The number attached to your intake is the number that matters.
Living costs: Guelph is not Toronto
Guelph is a city of its own in southwestern Ontario, roughly an hour from Toronto. It does not appear as a separate line in the cost-of-living benchmarks we work from, and the closest supplied benchmark is the "other (small city)" figure. Here are the supplied monthly benchmarks so you can see where a smaller Ontario city sits against the big names:
| City | Monthly living cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto | $3,500 | Highest demand; 1-BR ~$2,300+ |
| Vancouver | $3,500 | Most expensive rent in Canada |
| Burnaby | $3,200 | SFU/BCIT — slightly below Vancouver |
| Ottawa | $2,900 | Capital; uOttawa/Algonquin |
| Waterloo | $2,700 | Tech town; student-heavy |
| Calgary | $2,700 | No provincial sales tax |
| Halifax | $2,500 | Atlantic; AIP region |
| Montreal | $2,400 | Cheapest big city; Quebec rules differ |
| Edmonton | $2,400 | Affordable Alberta |
| Winnipeg | $2,200 | Lowest cost; UManitoba |
| Saskatoon | $2,200 | USask; affordable Prairies |
| Regina | $2,200 | Affordable |
| Fredericton | $2,200 | UNB; low cost |
| Other (small city) | $2,100 | Smaller centres trend cheaper |
All figures are per month. Do not multiply them in your head and treat the result as a budget — rents are signed for fixed terms, food and transport vary by season, and the first month always costs more because of deposits, a phone plan, winter clothing and a bed.
The practical warning for Guelph specifically: students often plan to live in Toronto and commute to campus because they think Toronto has more part-time work. Look at the Toronto monthly figure above, then look at the small-city figure, and factor in a daily inter-city commute. Most students who try it move to Guelph by second semester.
Funds you need to show
Separate from tuition, a study permit application is assessed on the funds you can show for yourself and anyone travelling with you. These are the thresholds, by number of people included:
| People included | Funds required |
|---|---|
| 1 | $23,448 |
| 2 | $29,192 |
| 3 | $35,888 |
| 4 | $43,572 |
| 5 | $49,419 |
| 6 | $55,736 |
| 7 | $62,054 |
| Each additional person | $6,318 |
Here is where Nepali applications are refused, and it is almost never the amount. It is the history and the source of the money. A balance that appeared in the account three weeks before filing, with no explanation, is treated differently from a balance that has been building for a year. Land sale proceeds, a loan sanction letter, a relative's gift — each needs its own paper trail showing where the money came from and how it legally reached your sponsor's account. Prepare the story, not just the statement.
Second mistake: showing exactly the threshold figure. The published minimum is what the table says; what actually gets scrutinised is whether your funds credibly cover tuition for your programme and living costs and leave room for a second year. A file that clears the threshold by a rupee and has no plan for year two reads as a file that has not thought past arrival.
English and entry requirements
| Requirement | University of Guelph |
|---|---|
| IELTS | 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 |
| TOEFL | 105 |
| Duolingo English Test | 110 |
The band condition is the one students miss. An IELTS overall of 6.5 with a 5.5 in writing does not meet this requirement — the "no band below 6.0" clause is not flexible, and retaking one module is usually faster and cheaper than appealing. Confirm the requirement for your specific programme on the admission pages, because competitive programmes can ask for more than the university's general minimum (uoguelph.ca/admission).
On scholarships: I have no official Guelph award figure to quote here, so I am not quoting one. Treat any amount you see on a WhatsApp forward or an agent's brochure as unverified until you find it on the university's own pages, and never build a budget assuming a scholarship you have not been granted in writing.
How to build your own number
- Fix the exact programme and degree level, then take the per-year tuition for that programme from the official fee schedule.
- Take the living-cost benchmark for the city you will actually live in.
- Check the funds threshold for the number of people in your application.
- Add your own ancillary fees, insurance and one-off arrival costs from your offer letter.

Common questions
How much does it cost to study at the University of Guelph per year?
Tuition is listed as $44,729–96,794/yr, depending on the programme you are admitted to (uoguelph.ca/admission). Living costs are separate and depend on where you live — the benchmark for a smaller Canadian city is $2,100 per month, while Toronto is $3,500 per month. Add your own ancillary fees and insurance from your offer letter.
Is Guelph cheaper to live in than Toronto?
Guelph is not listed separately in our benchmark table, but it is a smaller Ontario city, and the supplied small-city benchmark is $2,100 per month against Toronto's $3,500 per month. Rent is the main difference. Commuting from Toronto to save money rarely works out once transport and time are counted.
What IELTS score do I need for the University of Guelph?
IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. TOEFL 105 and Duolingo 110 are the listed alternatives. Individual programmes can set higher requirements, so verify against your specific programme page before booking a test date.
How much money do I need to show for a Canadian study permit?
For one person, the threshold is $23,448. For two people it is $29,192, for three $35,888, for four $43,572, and $6,318 is added for each person beyond seven. The amount is only half the test — the source and history of the funds are examined just as closely.
