University of Calgary IELTS Requirement for Nepali Students
UCalgary IELTS requirement by programme β undergraduate, postgraduate, MBA, and Nursing MN β plus the GPA and funds figures that matter.
University of Calgary IELTS requirement: the short answer
There is no single IELTS score for the whole university. For most master's programmes the published minimum is 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band. The Haskayne MBA asks for 7.0 overall with 6.0 in each band (TOEFL 105). Nursing's MN (Course-Based) programme does not publish a fixed figure β the university tells international applicants to email nursgrad@ucalgary.ca before applying. Undergraduate entry at UCalgary is driven by your Grade 12 percentage rather than a published IELTS cut-off in our data, so check the specific programme page before you assume a number. Undergraduate entry: grades decide more than English alone
UCalgary's general undergraduate minimum is a 70% average across five senior secondary subjects (GPA equivalent 2.8). Business and Engineering are more competitive, typically landing in the 75β85%+ range. Students who are close to the academic threshold but not quite there can enter through the UCalgary Continuing Education Pathway, then transfer into the degree once they meet the required GPA. No WES evaluation is required β UCalgary does its own internal credential check.
If your percentage sits below what a direct-entry programme wants, the pathway route is worth discussing with your counsellor before you rule UCalgary out.
Postgraduate (master's) IELTS requirements
| Programme type | IELTS requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard master's (general) | 6.5 overall / 6.0 per band | UCalgary does internal credential evaluation; WES not formally required |
| MBA (Haskayne) | 7.0 overall / 6.0 each band; TOEFL 105 | GMAT also required for Nepali applicants β no exemption |
| Nursing MN (Course-Based) | Not published β contact nursgrad@ucalgary.ca | Confirm before applying; a Graduate Certificate prerequisite also applies |
The gap between "standard" 6.5 and the MBA's 7.0 catches a lot of applicants who prepare for the general figure and then find the business school wants more.
The GPA side of postgraduate entry
Beyond English, UCalgary's postgraduate minimum GPA sits around 3.0 (roughly 60β65%), with competitive admits closer to 3.3β3.5 (65β75%). A standard three-year Tribhuvan University bachelor's is not accepted on its own for most UCalgary master's programmes β the Haskayne MBA FAQ explicitly states that 3-year TU holders need a completed master's degree first. A Qualifying Year through the Faculty of Graduate Studies exists as a bridge for GPA shortfalls.
MBA (Haskayne): the full checklist, not just IELTS
The IELTS figure on its own doesn't tell you whether you're competitive. The data behind Haskayne's MBA also requires:
- Work experience: minimum 2 years full-time professional experience. The average admitted student has 6 years.
- GMAT: required for international applicants (GMAT 550 or GRE equivalent). There is a CA/US-degree exemption, but it does not apply to Nepali applicants β you must submit a GMAT score.
- Interview: a mandatory video assessment is part of the process.
- Average admitted profile: roughly 600 GMAT, 6 years' experience, 3.2 GPA.
If your IELTS is 7.0 but your GMAT or work experience is thin, Haskayne's admitted-class averages suggest you're applying below the typical profile, not just at the published minimum.
Nursing MN: why there's no fixed IELTS number to quote
UCalgary's Nursing MN (Course-Based) is unusual: rather than publishing an IELTS score, international applicants are told to email nursgrad@ucalgary.ca directly. There's also a prerequisite most students miss β you must complete the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice I and II (24 units total) before you can even apply to the MN. Active CRNA (College of Registered Nurses of Alberta) registration is also required, and a BScN, BN, or Registered Psychiatric Nurse qualification is the only accepted academic background. Don't advise a Nepali nursing applicant toward this route without flagging the email step first β it's not optional.
Cost of living in Calgary while you study
Calgary's estimated monthly cost of living is $2,700, and the data notes Alberta has no provincial sales tax β a small but real difference compared with provinces that add one on top of purchases. This figure is separate from tuition and from the proof-of-funds amount your study permit application needs β use the Master Reckoner tool to check how your specific programme's costs compare, rather than adding these numbers together yourself.
Proof of funds (general Canada requirement)
For a single applicant, the standard proof-of-funds figure used for Canadian study permit applications is $23,448, with family multipliers applied for dependants (for example, Γ1.55 for a family of two, per the standard table). These are general Canada figures, not UCalgary-specific tuition or living costs β check the official programme page for Calgary-specific tuition.
Common questions
What IELTS score does University of Calgary need for a master's degree?
Most master's programmes ask for 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band. The Haskayne MBA is higher, at 7.0 overall with 6.0 in each band, and TOEFL 105 if you submit TOEFL instead. Nursing's MN programme does not publish a number β you're told to contact nursgrad@ucalgary.ca directly.
Does UCalgary accept a three-year bachelor's degree for a master's programme?
Not on its own for most programmes. The Haskayne MBA FAQ states explicitly that three-year Tribhuvan University graduates need a completed master's degree before applying, since UCalgary treats the standard four-year degree as the baseline.
Is there a pathway if my Grade 12 percentage doesn't meet UCalgary's undergraduate minimum?
Yes β the UCalgary Continuing Education Pathway lets students enter below the direct-entry threshold and transfer into the degree once they meet the required GPA. The general direct-entry minimum is a 70% average across five senior secondary subjects.
Do I need a WES evaluation to apply to UCalgary?
No. UCalgary performs its own internal credential evaluation for both undergraduate and most postgraduate applications, so a WES report is not a formal requirement β though some programmes may request one case-by-case.
