University of Calgary Fees for International Students

University of Calgary international tuition, Calgary living costs, proof-of-funds figures and IELTS entry — a plain guide for Nepali students.

The short answer

The University of Calgary publishes international tuition in the range of ~$28k–40k/yr, and the fee you pay depends on which faculty and programme you are admitted to, not on an average (ucalgary.ca/future-students). On top of that, living in Calgary is budgeted at $2,700 a month — keep the two numbers separate in your planning, because your tuition invoice and your rent come from different places and at different times.

All dollar figures on this page are Canadian dollars.

What the tuition range actually means

UCalgary's international tuition is a band, not a price tag. Engineering, business and health-related programmes sit at the upper end of a university's band; many arts and science programmes sit lower. Until you have an offer letter in hand, you do not know your number.

Three things Nepali families regularly get wrong about this figure:

It is per year, not for the whole degree. A four-year bachelor's means you are funding that annual figure again each year. Agents who quote "total course fee" from a single year's number are not helping you.

Tuition is not the only item on the university bill. Student fees, health insurance and course materials are billed separately from tuition at Canadian universities. The published tuition range does not include them, so do not treat it as your full university cost.

Fees can change between the year you apply and the year you graduate. Check the official page for the intake you are actually applying for rather than relying on a figure a cousin paid three years ago.

Use the Master Reckoner to line up the published tuition against entry and English requirements for the courses you are shortlisting, and see the Canada hub for how Calgary compares with other provinces.

Living costs: Calgary against the rest of Canada

Calgary is budgeted at $2,700 a month. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, which affects day-to-day spending on goods, though it does not change your rent.

City Monthly living cost Note
Toronto $3,500 Highest demand; 1-BR ~$2,300+
Vancouver $3,500 Most expensive rent in Canada
Burnaby $3,200 SFU/BCIT — slightly below Vancouver
Ottawa $2,900 Capital; uOttawa/Algonquin
Waterloo $2,700 Tech town; student-heavy
Calgary $2,700 No provincial sales tax
Montreal $2,400 Cheapest big city; Quebec rules differ
Edmonton $2,400 Affordable Alberta
Halifax $2,500 Atlantic; AIP region
Winnipeg $2,200 Lowest cost; UManitoba
Saskatoon $2,200 USask; affordable Prairies
Regina $2,200 Affordable
Fredericton $2,200 UNB; low cost
Other (small city) $2,100 Smaller centres trend cheaper

The catch with every monthly living figure: it assumes you have accommodation from the start. Students who arrive without a confirmed room spend heavily on short-term stays in their first weeks, and that money is gone before classes begin. Sort housing before you fly, not after.

If family members come with you

Living cost multipliers are published per household size:

People in the household Multiplier applied to the city figure
1 1
2 1.55
3 1.85
4 2.15

Apply the multiplier to the monthly city figure yourself with a calculator. We deliberately do not print a pre-multiplied number here, because the moment a quoted total is slightly off, families budget to the wrong figure.

Proof of funds

Proof of funds is a separate exercise from paying tuition. It is about showing that the money exists and is yours, for the household size you are declaring.

People in the household Funds figure
1 $23,448
2 $29,192
3 $35,888
4 $43,572
5 $49,419
6 $55,736
7 $62,054
Each additional person $6,318

The published figure is the minimum. What actually gets scrutinised is the history of the money: how long it has been in the account, where it came from, and whether the source matches your family's declared income. A balance that appeared in the account three weeks before the application, with no explanation, is the single most common reason a well-qualified Nepali student gets refused. Land sale proceeds, loans against property and remittance income are all acceptable sources when documented — the problem is almost never the source, it is the missing paper trail.

Also remember that meeting the funds figure does not pay your tuition. Tuition at ~$28k–40k/yr and the funds figure are two different tests, and you must satisfy both.

English and entry requirements

UCalgary asks for IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL 86 (ucalgary.ca/future-students).

The sub-score is where Nepali students most often fall short. An overall 6.5 with a 5.5 in writing does not meet this requirement — the 6.0 minimum applies to every band. If your writing or listening is weak, plan an extra test attempt into your timeline rather than hoping the university will overlook one band.

Specific programmes within the university may ask for higher English or additional subject prerequisites. Confirm against the programme page for your exact course before you pay an application fee.

Scholarships

We do not publish scholarship amounts for UCalgary on this page, because we only quote figures we can source officially. Check the university's own pages for what is open to international applicants and what the eligibility conditions are, and read the conditions carefully — many awards are assessed automatically at admission while others need a separate application and essay.

How to plan the money, in order

  1. Shortlist programmes and confirm the actual tuition for that faculty, not the range. Compare options in the Master Reckoner.
  2. Note the Calgary monthly living figure of $2,700 and work out your own annual accommodation and food plan from it.
  3. Build the funds documentation early — months early, not weeks.
  4. Sit IELTS or TOEFL with enough time to re-sit if one band lets you down.
  5. Confirm application and deposit deadlines directly on the university's page for your intake.

Common questions

How much is University of Calgary tuition for Nepali students?

Nepali students pay international tuition, which UCalgary publishes as ~$28k–40k/yr. Your exact figure depends on the faculty and programme you are admitted into. Student fees, insurance and materials are billed on top of tuition.

Is Calgary cheaper to live in than Toronto or Vancouver?

Calgary is budgeted at $2,700 a month, while Toronto and Vancouver are both budgeted at $3,500 a month. Alberta also has no provincial sales tax. Rent is still the largest single item in any Canadian city, so compare accommodation options before assuming the gap will show up in your account.

How much money do I need to show for a Canadian student application?

For a single applicant the published funds figure is $23,448, rising with household size — $29,192 for two people, $35,888 for three, and $6,318 for each additional person beyond seven. Meeting the number is only half the job; the funds must be traceable to a documented source with a clear history.

What IELTS score does University of Calgary need?

IELTS 6.5 overall with no individual band below 6.0, or TOEFL 86. The band minimum is enforced, so a 6.5 overall with a 5.5 in one skill does not qualify. Some programmes set higher requirements, so check your specific course page.
