University of Alberta Fees for International Students
University of Alberta international fees, Edmonton living costs, proof of funds and English requirements — figures and official links for Nepali students.
The short answer
International tuition at the University of Alberta is published as ~$30k–40k/yr, and the university lists its entry and fee information at ualberta.ca/admissions. Alongside that, you should budget for living costs in Edmonton, which are listed at CAD 2,400 per month, and you must separately show settlement funds for your study permit application — CAD 23,448 for a single applicant.
Those are three different numbers doing three different jobs. Tuition is what the university charges. Living cost is what Edmonton actually costs you month to month. Proof of funds is what a visa officer wants to see sitting in a bank account before you leave. Nepali families regularly confuse the second and third, and that confusion is where files fall apart.
What the tuition figure means

A few points a counsellor will tell you that the brochure will not:
- The range is published per year, not as a total for the degree. A four-year bachelor's is charged year by year, and each year is a fresh invoice.
- A range exists because faculties do not cost the same. Engineering, business and science programmes sit at different points from arts and social science programmes. Do not plan your finances on the bottom of the range until you have the fee for your exact programme from the official page.
- Tuition is not the full university bill. Mandatory non-instructional fees, health coverage and course materials are charged separately by the institution. The DATA we publish here does not carry those amounts, so check them on the admissions site before you commit.
If you are still comparing universities rather than costing one, run your subject and budget through the free Master Reckoner first — it matches courses to costs, entry requirements and English levels, so you are not comparing a Calgary diploma against an Edmonton degree by guesswork.
Living costs: Edmonton against the rest of Canada
Edmonton is one of the cheaper large Canadian cities, and for a student paying university-level tuition that difference matters more than most people assume.
| City | Monthly living cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto | CAD 3,500 | Highest demand; 1-BR ~$2,300+ |
| Vancouver | CAD 3,500 | Most expensive rent in Canada |
| Burnaby | CAD 3,200 | SFU/BCIT — slightly below Vancouver |
| Ottawa | CAD 2,900 | Capital; uOttawa/Algonquin |
| Waterloo | CAD 2,700 | Tech town; student-heavy |
| Calgary | CAD 2,700 | No provincial sales tax |
| Halifax | CAD 2,500 | Atlantic; AIP region |
| Edmonton | CAD 2,400 | Affordable Alberta |
| Montreal | CAD 2,400 | Cheapest big city; Quebec rules differ |
| Winnipeg | CAD 2,200 | Lowest cost; UManitoba |
| Saskatoon | CAD 2,200 | USask; affordable Prairies |
| Regina | CAD 2,200 | Affordable |
| Fredericton | CAD 2,200 | UNB; low cost |
| Other (small city) | CAD 2,100 | Smaller centres trend cheaper |
Read this table as monthly figures. Do not convert them into a yearly total in your head and then treat that total as your visa funds requirement — the funds requirement is a separate published number, given below, and a visa officer checks that one.
The catch with any cost-of-living figure is that it is an average for a student living normally, not a floor. Shared accommodation, cooking at home and a bus pass pull you below it. A private one-bedroom flat, eating out and a winter wardrobe bought in December push you above it. Alberta winters are genuinely cold, and first-year students from Kathmandu consistently under-budget for clothing and heating in their first term.
Proof of funds for the study permit
This is the number that decides whether your file is accepted, and it is not the same as your living-cost budget.
| People included in the application | Funds required |
|---|---|
| 1 | CAD 23,448 |
| 2 | CAD 29,192 |
| 3 | CAD 35,888 |
| 4 | CAD 43,572 |
| 5 | CAD 49,419 |
| 6 | CAD 55,736 |
| 7 | CAD 62,054 |
| Each additional person | CAD 6,318 |
The published minimum for a single applicant is CAD 23,448, but the minimum is not what actually gets your file approved. What gets checked is whether the money is credible: where it came from, how long it has been there, and whether the person who owns it has a documented reason to own it.
The refusals I see most often from Nepali applicants are not about the amount at all:
- Money that appears all at once. A large deposit landing three weeks before submission, with no explanation, reads as borrowed funds. Build history.
- Land valuation used as liquid cash. A property valuation is not money you can spend in Edmonton in February. Officers know the difference.
- Sponsor with no paper trail. An uncle in Qatar sponsoring you is fine. An uncle with no tax records, no salary slips and no relationship documentation is not.
- Funds that cover tuition or living, but not both. Your tuition is charged at ~$30k–40k/yr and the settlement funds figure above sits alongside it, not instead of it. Show that both are covered; do not present one number and hope it is read as covering everything.

English and academic entry
| Requirement | University of Alberta |
|---|---|
| IELTS | 6.5 (5.5) |
| TOEFL | 90 |
| Official page | ualberta.ca/admissions |
Read the IELTS line carefully. 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5 means a 5.0 in writing sinks an otherwise strong 6.5 average. Every intake, students book flights on the strength of an overall score and discover a single sub-band has blocked the offer. Check each band the day your result arrives, and if one band is short, retake before you build the rest of the file around it.
The TOEFL alternative is 90. If you are stronger on computer-based reading than on a live speaking test, that route is worth considering, but confirm the department accepts it for your specific programme on the admissions page.
How to plan the money, in order
- Get the exact tuition for your exact programme from ualberta.ca/admissions — not the published range, the programme figure.
- Write down Edmonton living costs at CAD 2,400 per month next to it. Keep them as two separate lines in your plan.
- Check the settlement funds line for the number of people on your application from the table above.
- Start the bank history early. Six months of visible, explainable balance is worth more than a last-minute deposit of any size.
- Confirm your IELTS or TOEFL meets both the overall and the sub-band requirement.
For scholarships and funding, use the university's own admissions pages. We do not publish scholarship amounts we cannot source, and neither should any agent quoting you a figure over the phone.

Common questions
How much does the University of Alberta cost per year for a Nepali student?
International tuition is published as ~$30k–40k/yr, and the exact figure depends on your faculty and programme. On top of tuition you should plan for Edmonton living costs, listed at CAD 2,400 per month, plus the university's own mandatory fees, health coverage and books. Get your programme-specific fee from ualberta.ca/admissions before you finalise a budget.
Is CAD 23,448 enough to apply for a Canadian study permit?
CAD 23,448 is the published settlement funds figure for a single applicant, and it sits alongside your tuition rather than replacing it. Meeting the number is necessary but not sufficient — the source, ownership and history of the money are examined. A balance that appeared suddenly is a common reason for refusal even when the amount is correct.
Is Edmonton cheaper than Toronto or Vancouver for students?
Yes, on the published figures. Edmonton is listed at CAD 2,400 per month, while Toronto and Vancouver are both listed at CAD 3,500 per month. Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina and Fredericton are listed lower still at CAD 2,200 per month, so if cost alone drives your decision, look at those cities too.
What IELTS score do I need for the University of Alberta?
IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5, or TOEFL 90. The sub-band rule is the one that catches people out — a 6.5 average with a 5.0 in one skill does not meet the requirement. Some programmes set higher requirements than the university minimum, so confirm on the admissions page for your specific course.
