UK or Thailand: Which Is Better for Study? Nepali Guide
Compare the UK and Thailand for Nepali students — tuition, living costs, funds rules, work rights and post-study stay, with only official figures quoted.
The short answer
If your goal is a recognised degree with a defined post-study work route and the ability to work part-time while you study, the UK is the stronger choice. If your budget cannot stretch to UK tuition plus UK maintenance money in the bank, Thailand is the cheaper place to hold a seat — but you must accept that the standard Thai student visa does not permit employment, and that the one-year post-graduation stay is confirmed at only one of the three Thai institutions covered here.
This page compares the two on the things Nepali families actually ask about: what you pay, what you must show in the bank, whether you can work, and what happens after graduation.
What tuition actually costs
The two systems publish fees differently, so read them carefully. UK institutions publish a fee per year for bachelor's degrees and a single fee for a one-year taught masters. The Thai institutions here publish a total for the whole programme. Do not compare one against the other in your head — read each row for what it says.
UK — sample published fees
| Course | Institution | Published fee |
|---|---|---|
| Master's, classroom-based | Bradford | £15,700 |
| Master's, Band 1 (business/MBA) | Keele | £18,200 |
| Taught masters, standard | Ulster | £18,310 |
| MA/MSc | Huddersfield | £18,700 |
| MSc, London campus | Huddersfield London | £18,700 |
| Bachelor's, classroom-based (per year) | Bradford | £16,100 |
| Bachelor's (per year) | Ulster | £17,490 |
| Bachelor's (per year) | Huddersfield | £17,600 |
| Bachelor's, science/engineering (per year) | Exeter | £31,200 |
| International Foundation Diploma | UCB | £11,000 |
| Pre-Master's (Business/Economics/Finance) | UoLIC | £25,210 |
Thailand — published programme totals
| Institution | Published tuition | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|
| GA Siam | THB 885,800 | Total 4-year bachelor's fee — confirm the instalment schedule with admissions |
| RIC Bangkok | THB 927,000 | Higher (Business) indicative total, 4 years. The Design-track total is THB 695,000 over about 3 years. Fee sheet dated 6 Jan 2025 — reconfirm the current 2026 rate |
| AIHM | THB 1,403,000 | Total 3.5-year BBA tuition. Compulsory extras (uniform, insurance, visa, application) add roughly THB 113,200 across the whole programme |
The catch on the Thai side is the date on the fee sheet and the "indicative" wording. Get the current figure and the instalment schedule in writing from admissions before a family commits.
The catch on the UK side is the deposit. Deposits across the UK institutions in our module range from £1,000 (UCB, within one month of offer) to £4,000 (Ulster, before CAS), and up to 50% of first-year tuition at London Met and UCB. Huddersfield London also charges a £260 non-refundable confirmation fee before it will request the CAS.
Living costs and the money you must show
This is where the two countries diverge most sharply, and where applications fail.
The UK sets a legal maintenance minimum: £1,483 per month for a course in London and £1,136 per month outside London, for each month of the course up to a maximum of 9 months — so £13,347 or £10,224. That money is required in addition to the tuition on your CAS. Note that London versus non-London is a Home Office definition tied to the institution's location, not how urban a place feels, and it is worth £347 a month. Check which side of the line the campus on your offer letter sits.
Thailand has no fixed government "show funds" figure. Consulates typically ask for THB 50,000–100,000 equivalent in bank statements, alongside the acceptance letter and the visa fee. The exact figure varies by consulate, so confirm with the one you are applying to.
For day-to-day living in Bangkok, the institutions here sit in one city: budget guidance is THB 15,000–30,000 per month in total (around US$400–800), plus THB 30,000–50,000 for first-month setup, with transport at THB 1,000–3,000 per month. University-linked shared hostel or dorm accommodation runs THB 2,500–7,000 per month; an off-campus studio or shared apartment THB 6,000–18,000; a serviced apartment or condo THB 20,000+. Our Thailand calculator uses THB 240,000 per year for living costs.
In the UK, the visa minimum and the real cost are not the same thing outside London. Bradford and Huddersfield are realistically £800–£1,150 a month with rent at £400–£650; Belfast, Coleraine and Derry are the same band with rent at £400–£700. London is £1,300–£1,900 realistically with rent at £800–£1,300 — the one place where the Home Office figure is roughly honest.
Official costs side by side
| Item | UK | Thailand |
|---|---|---|
| Student visa application (from outside) | £558 | Single-entry ED THB 2,000 ( |
| Health charge | Immigration Health Surcharge £1,035 per year of stay | — |
| Medical requirement | TB test certificate, £65, required for Nepalese applicants on courses over 6 months, from a UKVI-approved clinic | — |
| Extension | £558 to extend or switch from inside the UK | THB 1,900 per 90-day extension |
| Funds to evidence | £1,483/month London or £1,136/month elsewhere, max 9 months = £13,347 or £10,224 | THB 50,000–100,000 equivalent (varies by consulate) |
| Post-study visa | Graduate visa £937 + IHS £1,035/yr | Extension of an existing ED Plus, filed by the institution |
Work rights: the decisive difference
In the UK, students may work during their studies. Permitted hours depend on the course level and whether it is term-time or vacation, and are set per case on the gov.uk Student visa page — confirm against the specific CAS rather than assuming the familiar 20-hour figure. At the National Living Wage of £12.71 an hour (21 and over, from 1 April 2026), 20 hours a week is about £254 gross a week. That helps with living costs. It does not pay UK tuition, and a family that budgets as if it will has mis-budgeted.
In Thailand, the standard ED visa does not permit employment. Working without a permit risks fines, detention and deportation. The internships built into the curriculum at all three institutions run under the institution's own arrangement, not as independent paid work. So a Thai study budget has to be funded entirely from home.
After graduation
The UK Graduate Route length depends on your application date, not your course date: 2 years for a bachelor's or master's graduate applying on or before 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027, and 3 years for doctorates. A student starting a one-year masters in September 2026 finishes in late 2027 and therefore falls into the 18-month regime. Be honest about that from the first meeting. Beyond the Graduate Route, the Skilled Worker salary floor is £41,700 (new-entrant/recent-graduate rate £33,400), while the median UK graduate salary is £30,000 — so staying on through work sponsorship is not automatic.
Thailand's post-study year has stricter gating than most agents realise. Since 15 July 2024 a graduate can stay one extra year, but only as an extension of an existing Non-Immigrant ED Plus visa, which must be obtained at an embassy before entering Thailand and is only for bachelor's level and above at an accredited institution. The institution must file the extension with the Immigration Bureau — the graduate cannot file alone. The year itself does not permit work; that needs a job offer, a switch to a Non-Immigrant B visa and a separate Ministry of Labour work permit.
Of the three institutions here, only AIHM has documented evidence of ED Plus and the one-year post-graduation extension in its own visa guide. GA Siam and RIC Bangkok reference only the standard ED visa on their own pages. RIC's Diploma and Advanced Diploma years also sit below bachelor's level and would not qualify even if ED Plus were offered. Verify ED Plus in writing with admissions before promising a family the extra year.
Dependants and family
For UK postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, a student may bring a partner or child only if the course is a PhD or other doctorate (RQF level 8) or a research-based higher degree, or if they are a government-sponsored student on a course longer than 6 months. A taught MSc, MA or MBA does not qualify. Married applicants should hear this at the first meeting.
For Thailand, dependant options on the ED route are not centrally published and have historically been limited. Confirm directly with Thai Immigration or the institution before advising a family with accompanying dependants.
Which student should choose which
- You need to work part-time to survive the year: UK. Thailand's ED visa closes that door.
- Your family can fund tuition and living costs outright and wants the lowest total outlay: Thailand deserves a serious look, provided you accept there is no work income.
- You want the widest choice: the UK module here covers 17 institution profiles; the Thailand module covers 3.
- You want a defined post-study work route: UK, with the 18-month reality stated up front.
- You want a one-year masters rather than a two-year one: UK. One year of fees and one year of living costs, with 81% of the 2023/24 cohort in work or further study.

Common questions
Is Thailand cheaper than the UK for a Nepali student?
Published tuition in Thailand is quoted as a whole-programme total in Thai baht, and the UK is quoted per year in pounds, so compare the actual rows rather than a headline. What tips the real comparison is that the UK lets you work part-time during study while the standard Thai ED visa does not permit employment at all — so a Thai budget must be funded entirely from home.
Can I stay and work in Thailand after I graduate?
Only if you are already on a Non-Immigrant ED Plus visa, which must be obtained at a Thai embassy before you enter Thailand, and only if your institution files the extension with the Immigration Bureau on your behalf. The year itself does not permit work — that needs a job offer, a Non-Immigrant B visa and a separate Ministry of Labour work permit. Of the three institutions covered here, only AIHM has documented evidence of supporting ED Plus.
What is the most common reason a UK student visa is refused?
Financial evidence. The maintenance amount must be held for 28 consecutive days, and the end of that 28-day period must be within 31 days of the visa application date. The account must also be in the student's name or that of a permitted sponsor, with relationship evidence and a consent letter. Prepare the statements around the application date, not months in advance.
Can I bring my spouse on a one-year UK masters?
No. For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, dependants are permitted only on a PhD or other doctorate (RQF level 8), a research-based higher degree, or for a government-sponsored student on a course longer than 6 months. A taught MSc, MA or MBA does not qualify.
