UK or Malaysia: Which Is Better for Study? Nepali Guide
Compare the UK and Malaysia for Nepali students β tuition, living costs, funds rules, work rights and visa steps, using only published figures.
The short answer
Choose Malaysia if your budget is fixed and modest, and you want a recognised degree β often from a branch campus β without evidencing UK-level funds. Choose the UK if you want a one-year taught master's, a Graduate Route work period afterwards, and you can show tuition plus the Home Office maintenance amount on top of it.
Neither is "better" in the abstract. The honest comparison is between what each country demands from your bank account, what each lets you do while you study, and what each lets you do after you finish. Everything below uses published figures only. We do not convert pounds into ringgit anywhere on this page β take the two columns to your bank and do the conversion at the rate of the day.
Our full UK destination hub is at /uk, and the free Master Reckoner matches courses, costs, entry requirements and English levels in one place.
What each country asks you to prove
This is the real decision point, and it is where most families are surprised.
| UK | Malaysia | |
|---|---|---|
| Funds rule | Maintenance is set by the Home Office: Β£1,483/month in London, Β£1,136/month outside London, for up to 9 months β "Β£1,483/month, max 9 months = Β£13,347" (London) or "Β£1,136/month, max 9 months = Β£10,224" (outside London) | No single statutory minimum published. Practice: show at least one full year of tuition plus living clearly covered with surplus β commonly RM 20,000β40,000/year |
| Is tuition included? | No. Maintenance is in addition to the tuition shown on the CAS | Evidence is expected to cover tuition plus living for at least one year |
| How the money is checked | The 28-day rule: funds held for 28 consecutive days, with the end of that period within 31 days of the application date | Bank statements, fixed deposits, sponsor or scholarship letters |
| Visa/pass fee | Student visa Β£558 from outside the UK (same Β£558 to extend or switch inside the UK) | Student Pass fee set by Immigration by nationality and pass type β verify at application. A refundable security bond also applies, set by nationality |
| Health charge | Immigration Health Surcharge, Β£1,035 per year of stay | EMGS + visa bundle Year 1 ~RM 1,500β2,500 (processing, iKad, medical, insurance bundled) |
| Medical | TB certificate from a UKVI-approved clinic for Nepalese applicants on courses over 6 months (Β£65) | Pre-departure medical plus a mandatory post-arrival medical within 7 days of landing (~RM 200β350 at a panel clinic) |
The catch on the UK side is not the published minimum β it is the 28-day rule. Financial evidence is the most common refusal point: the 28 consecutive days, the 31-day window, and the requirement that the account be in the student's name or a permitted sponsor's name are all applied strictly. Prepare statements around the application date, not months in advance.
The catch on the Malaysian side is the opposite problem: because no statutory figure is published, families under-prepare. EMGS and the institution decide what is enough, so confirm the exact amount requested before you transfer anything.
Tuition: what the published fees look like
UK β sample fees from institutions on our list
| Course | Fee |
|---|---|
| Master's β Bradford, classroom-based | Β£15,700 |
| Master's β UCB Band 1 | Β£17,500 |
| Master's β Keele Band 1 (business/MBA) | Β£18,200 |
| Master's β Ulster, standard taught master's | Β£18,310 |
| Master's β Huddersfield MA/MSc | Β£18,700 |
| Master's β Huddersfield London MSc | Β£18,700 |
| Master's β London Met (from) | Β£20,000 |
| Bachelor's β Bradford, classroom-based | Β£16,100 per year |
| Bachelor's β UCB Band 1 | Β£16,500 per year |
| Bachelor's β Ulster | Β£17,490 per year |
| Bachelor's β Huddersfield | Β£17,600 per year |
| Bachelor's β Exeter science/engineering | Β£31,200 per year |
| International Foundation Diploma β UCB | Β£11,000 |
| Pre-Master's β UoLIC (Business/Economics/Finance) | Β£25,210 |
Note the Huddersfield London line. A London campus at Β£18,700 is the same figure as the Yorkshire campus β but the maintenance requirement for a London course is Β£1,483/month, not Β£1,136/month. London/non-London is a Home Office definition tied to the institution's location, not a judgement about how urban a place feels. Confirm which side of the line your specific campus falls on before you budget.
Malaysia β planning figures
| Level | Figure (RM) |
|---|---|
| Foundation / Pre-U | 27,000 |
| Diploma | 22,000 |
| Bachelor (branch campus) | 50,000 |
| Bachelor (private university) | 28,000 |
| Master / MBA | 45,000 |
| Living-cost baseline used in the planner | 24,000 |
| EMGS Year 1 | 2,000 |
| Medical | 275 |
These are planning estimates built from published Year-1 EMGS and medical costs plus a typical living-cost baseline β not a statutory schedule. Always confirm the exact figure with the institution and EMGS at application time.
Living costs and where you study
Malaysian accommodation is quoted per month in ringgit and varies sharply by city:
| Location | Shared room | Studio | Monthly budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kuala Lumpur (APU / UCSI) | RM 350β800 | RM 1,200β2,000 | RM 1,800β3,000 |
| Subang Jaya / Sunway City | RM 180β300 | RM 300β500 | RM 1,700β2,600 |
| Nilai (INTI IU / MILA) | RM 120β220 | RM 180β350 | RM 1,300β2,000 |
| Penang (INTI / UOW KDU) | RM 160β280 | RM 250β450 | RM 1,500β2,300 |
| Kuching, Sarawak (Swinburne) | RM 120β220 | RM 180β350 | RM 1,300β2,000 |
| Johor β Iskandar / EduCity | RM 150β250 | RM 220β400 | RM 1,300β2,100 |
On the UK side, the visa floor and the realistic cost diverge outside London. In Bradford and Huddersfield, rent is estimated at Β£400βΒ£650/month against a Β£1,136/month visa minimum; in London, rent is estimated at Β£800βΒ£1,300/month against a Β£1,483/month minimum β the one place where the Home Office figure is roughly honest. The "realistic" and "rent" ranges are sector estimates, not scraped figures, and exist so a family does not budget to the visa floor and run short.
Work during study β and this is where they differ most
UK. Permitted hours depend on the course level and whether it is term-time or vacation, and are set per case on the CAS β check it rather than assuming the familiar 20-hour figure. At the National Living Wage of Β£12.71/hour (21 and over, from 1 April 2026), 20 hours a week is about Β£254 gross a week. That helps with living costs. It does not pay UK tuition, and a family that plans on it doing so has mis-budgeted.
Malaysia. Part-time work is capped at 20 hours a week and is permitted only during semester breaks and official holidays β not during teaching weeks. Approved sectors only: restaurants, mini-markets, hotels, petrol stations. Nightclubs, bars, massage outlets and cashier or singer roles are banned. You need a valid Student Pass, an institutional support letter and Immigration endorsement. Illegal work means the pass is cancelled and removal follows.
If part-time earnings are part of your plan, the UK offers more of them. If they are not, this section should not sway you.
After you finish
The UK has a published post-study route: the Graduate Route runs for 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027, and 3 years for doctorates. It depends on the application date, not the course date β a student starting a one-year master's in September 2026 finishes in late 2027 and falls into the 18-month regime. The Graduate visa application is Β£937 + IHS Β£1,035/yr. Moving onward into a Skilled Worker visa means meeting a salary floor of Β£41,700, with a new-entrant/recent-graduate rate of Β£33,400, against a median UK graduate salary of Β£30,000 (HESA Graduate Outcomes 2023/24).
Our Malaysia brief covers the Student Pass only and does not set out a post-study work route. Treat any promise of staying on to work in Malaysia after graduation as unverified until the institution and the Immigration Department confirm it in writing.
Dependants
For UK postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, a student may bring a partner or child only if the course is a PhD or other doctorate (RQF level 8) or a research-based higher degree β or if they are a government-sponsored student on a course longer than 6 months. A taught MSc, MA or MBA does not qualify. In Malaysia, Dependent Passes exist for spouses and children of some categories, but eligibility is policy-dependent and dependants cannot work without their own authorisation β verify current rules before you plan around it.
Process and timing
Malaysia's Student Pass runs eVAL β Single Entry Visa β arrival β post-arrival medical β Student Pass and iKad, end to end in roughly 4β8 weeks, up to 12 in peak season. For Nepal, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh the SEV is applied for from home via the official eVISA portal (malaysiavisa.imi.gov.my) using the eVAL. Start 3β4 months before intake. The pass is institution-specific: changing institution means cancelling the current pass and a fresh EMGS application β you cannot simply transfer.
The UK Student visa can be applied for at the earliest 6 months before the course starts from outside the UK, or 3 months before from inside. Attendance and engagement are monitored and reported in both countries; Malaysia's common benchmark is around 80% attendance.
Common questions
Is Malaysia cheaper than the UK for a Nepali student?
The published figures are in two different currencies and we do not convert them here. Take the UK tuition figure for your course, add the maintenance requirement of Β£1,483/month (London) or Β£1,136/month (outside London) for up to 9 months, and set that against the Malaysian tuition figure plus the RM 20,000β40,000/year that is commonly evidenced. Do the conversion at your bank's rate on the day. The structural difference is that the UK requires tuition and maintenance evidenced separately.
Can I bring my wife or husband on a one-year master's?
Not in the UK. For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, dependants are permitted only on a PhD, another doctorate, or a research-based higher degree β or for a government-sponsored student on a course longer than 6 months. Raise this at your first counselling meeting, because a married applicant who finds out late has usually already paid a deposit.
What is the single most common reason a UK student visa is refused?
Financial evidence. The maintenance amount must be held for 28 consecutive days, and the end of that 28-day period must be within 31 days of the visa application date. The account must be in the student's name or that of a permitted sponsor β check whose name is on the account before you submit anything.
Can I work while studying in Malaysia to cover my fees?
No. Part-time work is limited to 20 hours a week and only during semester breaks and official holidays, in approved sectors such as restaurants, mini-markets, hotels and petrol stations. It requires a valid Student Pass, an institutional support letter and Immigration endorsement. Budget as though you will earn nothing.
