Study in the UK Without IELTS From Nepal: What Is Possible
Which UK institutions publish alternatives to IELTS for Nepali students, what still gets checked, plus fees, maintenance funds and the 28-day bank rule.
The short answer
Some UK institutions will admit a Nepali student without an IELTS score, but none of them will admit you without evidence of English. What changes is the form of that evidence: another accepted test, an approved national qualification from Nepal, a degree already taught in English, the institution's own test, or a pathway course that teaches you up to the required level.
There is a second catch that costs families money every year. Depending on the course and the provider, a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test may still be required, and several institutions in this group refuse IELTS Online and the IELTS Indicator in writing — Arden, Huddersfield London and London Met all say so. "Without IELTS" is a route, not a loophole. Get the institution to confirm your specific evidence in writing, for your specific course, before you pay anything.
The four routes that actually exist
1. A different English test
Most institutions accept more than one test. The accepted list differs by institution and by course.
| Institution | Published alternatives to IELTS |
|---|---|
| Manchester Metropolitan | iTEP Academic Plus 4.0 (UG) / 4.4 (PG); NCUK Password 6.0 (UG) / 6.5 (PG) |
| London Met | PTE Academic 59 in each component (in person only — the online version is no longer accepted), TOEFL iBT, Duolingo 105 overall for undergraduate, LanguageCert |
| Gloucestershire | PTE Academic, mapped as 59 = IELTS 5.5, 64 = 6.0, 70 = 6.5, 76 = 7.0 |
| University College Birmingham | TOEFL iBT 72 (Reading 18, Writing 17, Listening 17, Speaking 20) |
| Huddersfield London | Password Skills Plus at 6.0 with no component below 5.5; IELTS One Skill Re-Take at the same level |
| City St George's | IELTS One Skill Retake for one sub test, if taken within 60 days of the previous test and everything else is already met |
| Arden | An equivalent Secure English Language Test; International GCSE English as a 2nd Language at grade B/5 (accepted only up to the IELTS 6.5 level, valid 5 years); Arden's own English test, graded like IELTS, results in a couple of days |
| Ulster | A wide range of alternative tests — see the Ulster English language requirements page |
2. An approved Nepali qualification
This is the closest thing to a genuine no-test route. London Met states that a national English qualification from its approved Nepal list may be used. UWL notes on its Nepal country page that country-specific qualifications may be accepted in place of an English test. Both publish lists; both decide per course. Check before you book a test date — it is the one step that can save the test fee entirely.
3. Previous study in English
Arden accepts a degree-level qualification taught or researched in English that meets or exceeds a UK bachelor's, master's or doctorate. That is a published alternative, not a favour, so it is worth asking the question if your bachelor's was delivered in English.
4. A pathway or pre-sessional course
If your English is genuinely short, this is the route built for you. The University of Liverpool International College (UoLIC), a Kaplan pathway college, admits to a bachelor's preparation course from UKVI IELTS 4.0 to 5.5 depending on course length, and to a Pre-Master's from UKVI IELTS 4.5 to 5.5, with accepted equivalents. Direct entry to a UK bachelor's degree normally needs UKVI IELTS 6.0 with at least 5.5 in all skills — the Foundation Certificate exists to close that gap. Bradford runs a Pre-Sessional English Language Programme (PREP); Plymouth and UWL run pre-sessional courses in-house.
Price the pathway honestly. The UoLIC Foundation Certificate (Business/Law/Social Science) is £22,640 and the Pre-Master's (Business/Economics/Finance) is £25,210 — and that buys the preparation year only. The family then pays University of Liverpool degree fees for the remaining years. UCB's International Foundation Diploma is £11,000, with a published entry of UKVI IELTS 5.0 with no less than 4.5 in any band for the Hospitality and Tourism diploma.

There is no single "UK English requirement"
The published bars in this group run from 4.0 (a UoLIC Foundation Certificate) up to 8.0 (MMU Speech and Language Therapy). Quoting one number to a family is how expectations break.
| Institution | Undergraduate | Taught master's |
|---|---|---|
| Bradford | IELTS 6.0, no sub-test below 5.5 | IELTS 6.0, no sub-test below 5.5 (MSc Midwifery Studies 7.0, no sub-test below 6.0) |
| Ulster | IELTS 6.0, no band below 5.5 | IELTS 6.0, no band below 5.5 (higher for some programmes) |
| MMU | IELTS 6.0, no component below 5.5 | IELTS 6.5, no component below 5.5 |
| London Met | IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each | IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each for most; a published list of exceptions at 6.5 with 6.0 |
| Huddersfield London | IELTS (Academic) 6.0, no component below 5.5 | IELTS (Academic) 6.0, no component below 5.5 |
| UCA | IELTS 6.0, no section below 5.5 | IELTS 6.5, no section below 5.5 |
| St Mary's | IELTS 6.0, no section below 5.5 | IELTS 6.5, no section below 6.0 |
| Exeter | University-wide minimum of IELTS 5.5 equivalent in all four subskills, plus the GCSE English Language requirement | Set per programme |
Two warnings. The Exeter 5.5 is a university-wide floor, not the bar for a competitive programme — never treat it as "Exeter's requirement". And a course page always overrides a university-wide figure: Huddersfield's BA English asks 6.5 with no element below 6.0, while many of its master's courses sit at 6.0 with 5.5.
Most institutions expire the test at 2 years. St Mary's measures that to 1 September of the year the programme starts. UCB requires the award to be dated within two years of the course start.
What the money looks like
Tuition is the first half. These are published fees for this group:
| Course | Published fee |
|---|---|
| Bradford, classroom-based bachelor's | £16,100 per year |
| UCB Band 1 bachelor's | £16,500 per year |
| Ulster bachelor's | £17,490 per year |
| Huddersfield bachelor's (and Huddersfield London) | £17,600 per year |
| UCA bachelor's (2026/27) | £18,000 per year |
| Exeter science/engineering bachelor's | £31,200 per year |
| Bradford classroom-based master's | £15,700 |
| UCB Band 1 master's | £17,500 |
| Keele Band 1 (business/MBA) | £18,200 |
| Ulster standard taught master's | £18,310 |
| Huddersfield MA/MSc and Huddersfield London MSc | £18,700 |
| London Met master's (from) | £20,000 |
| Gloucestershire Band A master's | £20,190 |
Ulster charges a separate clinical placement levy of £12,133 on relevant programmes. Keele caps any 2026/27 increase at 5% and notifies by 30 April 2026. Plymouth states on its fees page that it reserves the right to increase fees if a UK Government levy on international tuition fee income is implemented.
The second half is maintenance, and it is in addition to the tuition shown on your CAS. The Home Office figure is £1,483 per month for a London institution and £1,136 per month elsewhere, for up to 9 months maximum regardless of course length — £13,347 or £10,224. London versus non-London is a Home Office definition tied to the institution's location, not how urban the town feels, and the difference is £347 a month. Confirm which side of the line your campus falls on.
Other costs with published figures: the Student visa fee of £558, the Immigration Health Surcharge at £1,035 per year, and the TB test at £65 — required for Nepalese applicants on courses longer than 6 months, from a UKVI-approved clinic.

The mistakes that get Nepali applications refused
- The 28-day rule. The maintenance amount must sit in the account for 28 consecutive days, and the end of that period must be within 31 days of the visa application date. This is the single most common refusal point.
- The wrong name on the account. If the funds are not in the student's name, you need relationship evidence, the sponsor's consent letter and the sponsor's statements. Check whose name the account is in before you submit.
- An English test the institution does not accept. Booking IELTS Online or the Indicator, then finding Arden, Huddersfield London or London Met will not take it.
- Assuming the +2 is enough everywhere. Most institutions here accept +2 for direct Year 1 at around 60% or GPA 2.5-2.8. City St George's does not accept the Nepal school-leaving qualification for Year 1 at all — that student needs a foundation year, A-Levels or the IB.
- Planning for a spouse on a taught master's. For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, dependants are permitted only on a PhD or other doctorate, a research-based higher degree, or for a government-sponsored student on a course longer than 6 months.
Common questions
Can I get a UK student visa without IELTS from Nepal?
You can apply without an IELTS score if the institution accepts other evidence of your English and issues a CAS on that basis. London Met publishes an approved Nepal list of national English qualifications, UWL notes that country-specific qualifications may be accepted instead of a test, and Arden accepts a degree taught in English plus its own test. Depending on the course and provider, a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test may still be required — ask the admissions team to confirm your evidence in writing for your exact course.
My IELTS is below the course requirement. What are my options?
A pathway or pre-sessional course. UoLIC admits to a bachelor's preparation course from UKVI IELTS 4.0 to 5.5 and to a Pre-Master's from 4.5 to 5.5, against a normal direct-entry bar of UKVI IELTS 6.0 with at least 5.5 in all skills. Bradford runs its PREP programme and Plymouth and UWL run pre-sessional courses. Budget for the pathway fee and the degree fees that follow it — the UoLIC Foundation Certificate at £22,640 covers the preparation year only.
How much money do I need to show for the visa?
£1,483 per month for a London institution or £1,136 per month outside London, for each month of the course up to 9 months — £13,347 or £10,224. That is on top of the tuition fee shown on your CAS, less anything already paid. It must be held for 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of the application date.
Does skipping IELTS lower the academic requirement too?
No. English evidence and academic entry are two separate checks. Ulster maps Nepal grades precisely — a 2:1 equals 70% on a 3-year bachelor's or 65% on a 4-year; a 2:2 equals 60% or 55%. Bradford maps a 4-year bachelor's at 80%/GPA 3.5 to a UK first, 65%/GPA 3.0 to a 2:1 and 50%/GPA 2.5 to a 2:2.
