Monthly Expenses for Students in the UK: Real Costs
What Nepali students actually spend monthly in the UK — visa minimums of £1,483 London and £1,136 elsewhere, real rent ranges, and one-off costs.
The short answer
For visa purposes, the Home Office requires £1,483 per month if your course is in London and £1,136 per month if it is outside London, for up to 9 months — £13,347 or £10,224 in total (gov.uk Student visa). That is the minimum you must prove in the bank; it is not a budget, and outside London most students spend more than the £1,136 floor once rent, food, transport and a phone bill are counted.
This page separates the three numbers Nepali families keep mixing up: the visa maintenance figure, the amount you will actually spend each month, and the one-off costs you pay before you ever land.
The visa minimum versus the real monthly spend
The maintenance figure is set by the Home Office and is tied to where the institution is located, not how big or expensive the city feels. The "realistic" and "rent" ranges below are estimates built from sector norms — they are not official figures. They are here so that a family does not budget to the visa floor and run short in month four.
| City / campus area | Visa minimum | Realistic monthly | Rent per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| London (UWL, City St George's, St Mary's, Huddersfield London, London Met, Arden London) | £1,483/month | £1,300 – £1,900 | £800 – £1,300 (room or hall) |
| Manchester (MMU, Arden Manchester) | £1,136/month | £950 – £1,350 | £550 – £850 |
| Birmingham (UCB, Arden Birmingham) | £1,136/month | £900 – £1,300 | £500 – £800 |
| Belfast / Coleraine / Derry (Ulster) | £1,136/month | £800 – £1,150 | £400 – £700 |
| Bradford / Huddersfield | £1,136/month | £800 – £1,150 | £400 – £650 |
| Keele / Staffordshire | £1,136/month | £800 – £1,150 | £450 – £700 on campus |
| Plymouth / Exeter / Cornwall | £1,136/month | £900 – £1,300 | £500 – £850 |
| Cheltenham / Gloucester | £1,136/month | £850 – £1,250 | £450 – £750 |
| Farnham / Canterbury / Epsom / Rochester (UCA) | £1,136/month | £950 – £1,400 | £550 – £900 |
| Liverpool (UoLIC) | £1,136/month | £850 – £1,200 | £450 – £700 |
What this table is telling you
In London the visa floor and the real cost sit close together — it is the one place where the Home Office figure is roughly honest. Everywhere else, the £1,136 floor is a legal test, not a living budget. In Bradford, Huddersfield and the Ulster campuses the realistic range starts at £800, which is the genuine low end of UK student living. In the Gloucestershire towns the cost is low but the part-time job market is smaller than in a big city — a cheap room in a small town is not automatically a cheaper year.
The London line is worth £347 a month
London versus non-London is a Home Office definition tied to the institution's location. Some campuses sit inside London's cost shadow without being in London for visa purposes — UCA's Epsom and Farnham campuses are the clearest example, so check which campus your offer letter actually names. The difference between the two maintenance rates is £347 a month.
It runs the other way too. Huddersfield's London campus charges £17,600/yr for a bachelor's degree and £18,700 for an MSc — the same as the Yorkshire campus — but the London campus carries the £1,483 maintenance rate and London rent of £800 – £1,300 a month. Same tuition, different total cost of the year.
One-off costs before and at arrival
These are not monthly. They are paid once, mostly before departure, and families routinely forget them when converting to rupees.
| Cost | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Student visa application fee | £558 | gov.uk |
| Immigration Health Surcharge | £1,035 per year | Charged per year of the visa |
| TB test certificate | £65 | Required for Nepalese applicants on courses longer than 6 months, from a UKVI-approved clinic |
Add to this your deposit to the university, flights, the first month's rent and usually a rent deposit, and a SIM card. None of these come out of the maintenance money you show the Home Office — the maintenance is proof you can live on top of the tuition shown on your CAS.
The bank statement rule that causes most refusals
Maintenance must be held for 28 consecutive days, and the end of that 28-day period must be within 31 days of the visa application date. This is the single most common refusal point for Nepali applicants. Money that arrived in the account on day 20, or a statement that is six weeks old by the time you apply, fails the test even when the total is correct.
Two further points counsellors see go wrong:
- Whose name the account is in. If the funds are not in the student's own name, you need relationship evidence, a sponsor consent letter and the sponsor's bank statements. Check this before you submit, not after.
- Maintenance is 9 months maximum regardless of course length, and it is in addition to the tuition on the CAS. A two-year course does not mean 24 months of maintenance — but it also does not mean the money for year two is optional.
Can part-time work cover the monthly cost?
Not on its own. Permitted working hours depend on your course level and whether it is term time or vacation, and they are set on your CAS — read it rather than assuming a standard answer.
| Rate | Amount |
|---|---|
| National Living Wage, 21 and over (from 1 April 2026) | £12.71/hr |
| 18 to 20 | £10.85/hr |
| Under 18 | £8.00/hr |
| Apprentice | £8.00/hr |
| Accommodation offset | £11.10/day |
Part-time work helps with groceries, transport and a phone bill. It does not pay tuition, and a plan that depends on finding a job in week one is a plan that fails. Manchester and Birmingham have the deepest part-time job markets of the cities listed above; small towns have the thinnest.
Tuition sits on top of all of this
Your monthly living cost is only half the picture. The tuition on your CAS is the other half, and it varies enormously across the institutions covered here — a classroom-based master's at Bradford is £15,700, Ulster's standard taught master's is £18,310, Huddersfield's MA/MSc is £18,700, and Exeter's science and engineering bachelor's degrees are £31,200 per year (exeter.ac.uk, bradford.ac.uk, ulster.ac.uk, hud.ac.uk).
Put the tuition figure and the monthly figure side by side before you commit. Bradford at £15,700 in a region where rent runs £400 – £650 is a very different year from a London course at £1,483 a month maintenance. Common questions
How much money do I need to show for a UK student visa from Nepal?
£1,483 per month for a London course or £1,136 per month outside London, for each month of the course up to 9 months — £13,347 or £10,224. This is on top of the tuition fee shown on your CAS. The money must be held for 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of the application date.
Is £1,136 a month enough to live on outside London?
It is enough to satisfy the visa requirement, which is the only thing it is designed to do. In Bradford, Huddersfield or the Ulster campuses a realistic monthly spend starts around the £800 – £1,150 range, so the floor can work. In Manchester, Birmingham or the UCA towns, realistic ranges run higher than £1,136, so budget above the minimum.
Which UK city is cheapest for Nepali students?
On living costs, Bradford, Huddersfield and the Ulster campuses in Northern Ireland show the lowest rent ranges — £400 – £700 a month for a room. Bradford also has the lowest tuition among the institutions covered here, at £15,700 for a classroom-based master's, which makes it the strongest total-cost combination on this list. Liverpool is low-cost for a major city.
Can I bring my husband or wife on a one-year UK master's?
No. For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, dependants are permitted only on a PhD or other doctorate, a research-based higher degree, or for a government-sponsored student on a course longer than 6 months. A taught MSc, MA or MBA does not qualify. Raise this with your family at the first meeting rather than after the deposit is paid.
