IELTS Score for UK Student Visa: What Actually Gets Checked
There is no fixed IELTS score for a UK student visa — find out what UKVI actually checks, what your CAS must show, and where refusals really happen.
IELTS score for a UK student visa: the short answer
There is no IELTS band number written into the UK Student visa rules themselves. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) does not test your English — it checks your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), and the CAS reflects whatever English language evidence your university asked for and accepted. So the "score you need" is set by the course you are admitted to, not by a universal Home Office threshold. A few institutions will accept an approved Nepali national qualification instead of IELTS altogether, but where IELTS is required, the number is the university's, not UKVI's.
This matters because families often prepare for the wrong test. A student can hold a strong IELTS score and still be refused — for financial evidence, not English. And a student can be admitted without ever sitting IELTS, if their course accepts an alternative. Get the course-specific requirement from the offer letter, not from a general "UK visa IELTS score" search.
Why the visa doesn't set the score — the CAS does
Everything in a Student visa application keys off the CAS. It is issued by the institution after the deposit, and it carries the course, the fee, and the amount already paid. If the course required IELTS, PTE or TOEFL, the institution records that it was met before issuing the CAS. If the course accepts an approved national qualification instead — University of West London and London Met both publish such lists for Nepal — the CAS reflects that route instead.
UKVI's job at the visa stage is to check that the CAS is genuine and that the financial evidence lines up with it — not to re-mark your English test. This is why asking "what IELTS score does the Home Office need" is the wrong question. The right question is "what does my specific CAS say I had to prove."
English language evidence Nepali students actually submit
| Document | What it needs to show |
|---|---|
| Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) | Issued after the deposit; carries the course, the fee, and the amount already paid. Everything else in the application keys off it. |
| English language evidence | IELTS/PTE/TOEFL as required by the course, or an approved national qualification where the institution accepts one. |
| Academic transcripts and certificates | NEB/+2 or bachelor's transcripts and certificates. Nepalese documents may need official translation. |
| TB test certificate | Required for Nepalese applicants on courses longer than 6 months, from a UKVI-approved clinic. |
| Passport | Valid, with sufficient remaining validity for the course. |
| Sponsor documents, if funds are not in the student's own name | Relationship evidence plus the sponsor's consent letter and bank statements. |
| ATAS certificate, if applicable | Required for some sensitive science and engineering subjects at postgraduate level. |
Note what is missing from this list: a band score. It is not a visa-application document in its own right — it is folded into whatever evidence your university used to issue the CAS.
The fees and funds that sit alongside the English requirement
Passing the English bar gets the CAS issued. The visa application that follows has its own costs, and these are fixed by the Home Office — unlike IELTS, they are the same for every applicant regardless of course or university.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Student visa application (outside the UK) | £558 |
| Student visa extend / switch (inside the UK) | £558 |
| Immigration Health Surcharge | £1,035 per year of stay |
| Maintenance funds — London | £1,483/month, max 9 months = £13,347 |
| Maintenance funds — outside London | £1,136/month, max 9 months = £10,224 |
Maintenance is in addition to the tuition fee already shown on the CAS, not a substitute for it. A student going to a London course needs to evidence the tuition on the CAS plus the London maintenance figure separately — the two are quoted side by side, not added together here, so check the CAS for the exact fee figure that applies to your offer.
Deposits and CAS: the step before English evidence even matters
Before a CAS is issued at all, most institutions in this bracket take a deposit. Ulster University asks for £4,000 before the CAS is released. Huddersfield's London campus adds a separate £260 non-refundable confirmation fee on top of the deposit, before the CAS is even requested. Fees can also move after acceptance: Keele caps any 2026/27 increase at 5% and notifies by 30 April 2026, while Plymouth has flagged on its own fees page that a possible levy on international tuition income could lead to a fee increase if implemented. None of this is about English ability, but it all happens before the visa stage — plan the deposit and the CAS timeline before worrying about the IELTS band.
Where the real refusal risk sits — and it isn't the English score
Financial evidence, not English ability, is the most common point of refusal on a UK Student visa. Two rules catch families out every intake. First, the maintenance money must be held for 28 consecutive days, and the end of that period must fall within 31 days of the application date — prepare the bank statements around the application date, not months in advance. Second, the account has to be in the student's own name or a permitted sponsor's name; check whose name it is in before submitting anything.
Compare that to English evidence: once the CAS is issued, the English requirement is effectively settled. UKVI is not re-checking a band score at the visa stage. The institutions in our UK hub set their own English bar per course — some accept national qualifications for Nepal instead of IELTS entirely — so the more useful exercise for a family is matching the course, the fee, and the English route together before applying, which is exactly what the free Master Reckoner tool is built to do.
Common questions
What IELTS score do I need for a UK student visa?
There isn't one set by the Home Office. The visa checks your CAS, and the CAS reflects whatever English evidence your specific course required — IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, or in some cases an approved national qualification instead. Ask the university for the course-specific requirement rather than searching for a universal visa number.
Can a Nepali student skip IELTS for a UK student visa?
At some institutions, yes. UWL and London Met both publish approved lists of national qualifications that Nepali students can use instead of IELTS. It depends entirely on the course and institution, so this has to be confirmed on the individual offer, not assumed across the board.
If my English score is fine, can the visa still be refused?
Yes, and this is the mistake families make most often. Financial evidence — the 28-day holding rule, the 31-day window, and whose name the account is in — is the most common refusal point, not English ability. A strong IELTS score does not protect against a funds timeline that has gone wrong.
Does the visa fee or maintenance amount depend on my English score?
No. The £558 application fee, the £1,035-per-year Immigration Health Surcharge, and the maintenance figures (£1,483/month for London, £1,136/month outside London, both up to 9 months) are fixed Home Office amounts that apply regardless of which English test route the student used to get the CAS.
