How Nepali Bachelor's Students Are Surviving in the UK
Real costs, work rules and visa money tests for Nepali bachelor's students in the UK — fees per year, city-by-city living costs and the refusal traps.
The short answer
Nepali bachelor's students in the UK survive on three things: a tuition fee paid year by year, maintenance money the Home Office insists is held in the bank before the visa, and part-time work that covers living costs but never tuition. The students who cope best are the ones in low-cost cities — Bradford, Huddersfield, Belfast — who budgeted above the visa minimum rather than at it.
This page sets out the figures that decide whether a three- or four-year degree is affordable, and the points where applications actually get refused. For course-by-course matching, use the free Master Reckoner; for the wider destination picture, see the UK hub.
Tuition: a per-year figure, not a one-off
A bachelor's fee is charged per year. A master's is one year and done; an undergraduate degree repeats the fee for each year of study, and the CAS will normally show one year at a time. Families who plan for a single payment get a shock in year two.
| Institution / course | Fee | London for visa purposes? |
|---|---|---|
| Bradford — classroom-based | £16,100 per year | No |
| UCB — Band 1 | £16,500 per year | No |
| Ulster | £17,490 per year | No |
| Huddersfield | £17,600 per year | No |
| Huddersfield LONDON | £17,600 per year | Yes |
| UCA (2026/27) | £18,000 per year | No |
| Exeter — science/engineering | £31,200 per year | No |
| UCB — International Foundation Diploma | £11,000 | No |
| UoLIC — Foundation Certificate (Business/Law/Social Sci) | £22,640 | No |
Two catches worth saying out loud. First, a pathway fee buys the preparation year only — after the University of Liverpool International College year, the family then pays University of Liverpool degree fees for the remaining years. Quote both halves or the total will come as a shock.
Second, fees can move after acceptance. Plymouth states on its own fees page that the UK Government has announced a possible levy of around 6% on international tuition fee income and that it reserves the right to increase fees if it is implemented. Keele caps any 2026/27 increase at 5% and notifies by 30 April 2026.
A placement year is priced separately where it is offered: Huddersfield £3,300, MMU £1,955, Gloucestershire £2,575, UCA £3,490. It adds a year of cost and time, and it is the single most effective way to convert a UK degree into a UK job offer.
The city decides whether the money lasts
The Home Office maintenance rate is £1,483/month for a course in London and £1,136/month elsewhere. That London/non-London split is a Home Office definition tied to the institution's location — not a judgement about how urban a town feels — and it is worth £347 a month. Check which side of the line the named campus falls on before anyone budgets.
In the table below, the "visa minimum" column is official. The "realistic" and "rent" columns are estimates built from sector norms, not scraped figures, and exist to stop a family budgeting to the visa floor and running short.
| Where | Visa minimum | Realistic monthly | Rent |
|---|---|---|---|
| London (UWL, City St George's, St Mary's, Huddersfield London, London Met, Arden London) | £1,483/month | £1,300 – £1,900 | £800 – £1,300 |
| Manchester (MMU, Arden Manchester) | £1,136/month | £950 – £1,350 | £550 – £850 |
| Birmingham (UCB, Arden Birmingham) | £1,136/month | £900 – £1,300 | £500 – £800 |
| Belfast / Coleraine / Derry (Ulster) | £1,136/month | £800 – £1,150 | £400 – £700 |
| Bradford / Huddersfield | £1,136/month | £800 – £1,150 | £400 – £650 |
| Keele / Staffordshire | £1,136/month | £800 – £1,150 | £450 – £700 on campus |
| Plymouth / Exeter / Cornwall | £1,136/month | £900 – £1,300 | £500 – £850 |
| Cheltenham / Gloucester | £1,136/month | £850 – £1,250 | £450 – £750 |
| Farnham / Canterbury / Epsom / Rochester (UCA) | £1,136/month | £950 – £1,400 | £550 – £900 |
| Liverpool (UoLIC) | £1,136/month | £850 – £1,200 | £450 – £700 |
In London the visa floor and the real cost sit close together — it is the one place where the Home Office figure is roughly honest. Everywhere else, the realistic range is what a student actually spends, and it can sit above the visa minimum in the first months while deposits and setup costs land.
Keele guarantees on-campus accommodation if the student applies by 30 June for a September start. Cheltenham and Gloucester are low-cost but have a smaller part-time job market than a big city — cheap rent with no shifts available is not a saving.
Working while studying: what it covers
Permitted working hours depend on the course level and on whether it is term-time or vacation. The gov.uk Student visa page sets this per case, so confirm against the specific CAS rather than assuming the familiar 20-hour figure.
Pay is set by the National Living Wage bands:
| Band | Rate |
|---|---|
| 21 and over | £12.71/hr |
| 18 to 20 | £10.85/hr |
| Under 18 | £8.00/hr |
| Apprentice | £8.00/hr |
| Accommodation offset | £11.10/day |
The £12.71/hr rate applies from 1 April 2026 to workers aged 21 and over. That matters more for bachelor's students than for master's students, because many Nepali +2 leavers arrive at 18 or 19 and sit in the £10.85/hr band for their first year or two.
At £12.71/hour, 20 hours a week is about £254 gross a week. That helps with living costs. It does not pay UK tuition, and a family that plans on it doing so has mis-budgeted. Manchester and Birmingham have the strongest part-time job markets on this list; Birmingham's hospitality sector is directly relevant to UCB students.
The visa money rules that cause refusals
Financial evidence is the most common point of refusal. Three rules do most of the damage.
- The 28-day rule. The maintenance amount must sit in the account for 28 consecutive days, and the end of that period must be within 31 days of the visa application date. Prepare statements around the application date, not months in advance.
- Whose name the account is in. If the funds are not in the student's own name, you need relationship evidence plus the sponsor's consent letter and bank statements. Check the account holder's name before submitting.
- Maintenance is capped at 9 months regardless of course length. A three-year degree still evidences a maximum of 9 months: £1,483/month up to 9 months = £13,347 for London, or £1,136/month up to 9 months = £10,224 outside London. This is in addition to the tuition shown on the CAS, less fees already paid.
Other fixed costs to plan for:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Student visa application (outside the UK) | £558 |
| Student visa extend / switch (inside the UK) | £558 |
| Immigration Health Surcharge | £1,035 per year of stay |
| TB test | £65 |
| Deposits in this group | from £1,000 (UCB, within one month of offer) to £4,000 (Ulster, before CAS) |
| Huddersfield London confirmation fee | £260, non-refundable, before the CAS request |
A TB certificate from a UKVI-approved clinic is required for Nepalese applicants on courses longer than 6 months. Book it before the visa application. The IHS then gives NHS access on the same basis as a UK resident.
Attendance and academic engagement are monitored and reported to the Home Office. A compliance breach risks both the place and the visa — this is the quiet reason some students stop surviving in the UK.
After the degree: plan for the realistic outcome
The Graduate Route gives 2 years of unsponsored work to a bachelor's or master's graduate applying on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months for anyone applying on or after 1 January 2027; doctoral graduates get 3 years. It costs £937 plus IHS £1,035/yr.
Converting that into a long-term UK career means a licensed sponsor and a Skilled Worker visa, which since 22 July 2025 needs a salary of at least £41,700 — or £33,400 on the new-entrant/recent-graduate rate. The median UK graduate salary is £30,000 (HESA Graduate Outcomes 2023/24, published 4 June 2026; 81% of that cohort were in paid or unpaid work). The typical graduate does not clear even the discounted floor.
Subject changes the picture: engineering and technology £32,478, computing £31,788, business and management £28,990, law £26,488, design and creative arts £25,998, media and journalism £25,938. If a student is choosing a creative degree, treat it as a vocation rather than a salary play.
The durable return is a recognised degree plus UK work experience, most often cashed in back in Nepal, India or the Gulf. More guides are on the blog.
Common questions
How much does a Nepali bachelor's student need in the bank?
£1,483 per month for a London course or £1,136 per month outside London, for each month of the course up to a maximum of 9 months — so £13,347 or £10,224. That is on top of the tuition fee shown on the CAS, less anything already paid. It must be held for 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of the application date.
Will my +2 get me straight into first year?
At most institutions on this list, yes — the common bar is about 60% or GPA 2.5–2.8. Bradford maps GPA 3.8 to 136+ UCAS points, 3.4 to 120–135 and 3.2 to 96–119. But City St George's, University of London does not accept the Nepal school-leaving qualification for Year 1 at all; that student needs a foundation year, A-Levels or the IB.
Can part-time work pay my tuition?
No. At £12.71 an hour for 21-and-over workers, 20 hours a week is about £254 gross — and permitted hours are set by the CAS, not by assumption. If you are 18 to 20 the rate is £10.85/hr. Work covers food, transport and part of the rent; it does not cover a £16,100 or £17,600 annual fee.
Which option is cheapest overall for a bachelor's degree?
Bradford, on both halves — £16,100 per year classroom-based, in one of the lowest-cost parts of the UK, where the visa minimum is £1,136/month. Ulster in Northern Ireland is the next strongest total-cost option, at £17,490 per year with the lowest living costs of any UK region here. Note Ulster also charges a separate clinical placement levy of £12,133 on relevant programmes.
