Design & Creative Arts in Thailand for Nepali Students
Ranked guide to design and creative arts study in Bangkok for Nepali students β fees, English scores, ED visa rules and what to verify first.
Where design and creative arts actually sit in Thailand
If you want a design or creative arts qualification in Thailand, Raffles International College Bangkok is the one institution in this guide built for it β a Bangkok campus of the Singapore-headquartered Raffles Education Network, specialising in design, creative and business diplomas and bachelor's degrees, taught through portfolio-led studios. The other two Bangkok institutions covered here, Global Academy at Siam University and the Asian Institute of Hospitality Management, are strong options but are not design schools, and you should only look at them if your interest sits next door to design rather than inside it.
Be clear-eyed about one thing before you read further: Thailand's creative-education market is real but thin at the international-programme level. You are choosing between a small number of providers, not browsing a catalogue. That makes verification with admissions more important here than in destinations with dozens of art schools.
The ranked list
1. Raffles International College Bangkok β the design-first choice
Located in Bangna, Bangkok. Not ranked β it is a specialist college β but accredited by Thailand's Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. It grants diplomas and top-up bachelor's degrees inside the Raffles network, which spans 8+ countries.
Why it ranks first for this search: it is the only provider here whose teaching model is portfolio-led design studios rather than lecture halls. The fee sheet used in this guide is dated 6 Jan 2025 and gives the Design-track total as THB 695,000, with a higher indicative Business total of THB 927,000. Reconfirm the current 2026 rate with admissions before you plan around either number.
The catch: the data used here does not list individual Raffles Bangkok design course titles, intakes or durations. Ask admissions for the exact programme name, the award (diploma vs top-up bachelor's), and who confers the final certificate. Also ask about progression to other Raffles campuses β cross-network progression at Bangkok is less formally documented than the transfer routes at the other two institutions.
2. Global Academy at Siam University (La Trobe Bangkok) β for creative-technology, not studio art
This is a dual-degree partnership: Siam University co-delivers La Trobe University (Australia) or University of Victoria (Canada) degrees on its Bangkok campus. Programme materials cite La Trobe at QS World Ranking #217 and University of Victoria at QS #349 β verify the current year on qs.com yourself.
There is no design programme here. The bachelor's options are International Business Management, Tourism & Hospitality Management, Bachelor of IT (Artificial Intelligence) and Bachelor of IT (Software Engineering), all at THB 885,800 total, 4 years, with Sep, Jan and Jun intakes. The dual master's in business leadership is THB 555,000 total.
It earns second place for one reason: if your creative interest is digital β interface work, game or software-side production β the IT degrees carry a 2+2 transfer route to Australia or Canada, and you finish with two testamurs. If you want fashion, interior, graphic or fine art, this is not your campus.
3. Asian Institute of Hospitality Management β hospitality, with design-adjacent service work
AIHM is a hospitality-only institute in Bangkok Riverside, owned by a hotel group and academically associated with Les Roches (Switzerland). Classes run inside a real operating hotel. Its BBA in Global Hospitality Management is THB 1,403,000 total tuition over 3.5 years (7 semesters, including 2 internship semesters), with additional compulsory expenses of THB 113,200 across the whole programme for items like uniform, insurance, visa and application. Shorter routes exist: CIHA certificate THB 320,000 total, Postgraduate Diploma THB 380,000 total, BTEC International Level 3 THB 155,000 total.
It is third for this search because it is not a creative arts provider. It is listed because some students who say "creative" actually mean guest-facing, design-conscious hospitality work β and because it is the only one of the three whose own visa guide confirms ED Plus.
Fees and living costs, side by side
Do not add these together in your head and stop there. Quote both to your family and let them total it.
| Institution | Programme | Published fee |
|---|---|---|
| RIC Bangkok | Design track | THB 695,000 total |
| RIC Bangkok | Business (higher indicative total) | THB 927,000 total |
| GA Siam | Bachelor's (Business / Tourism / IT) | THB 885,800 total |
| GA Siam | Dual Master's in Business Leadership | THB 555,000 total |
| AIHM | BBA Global Hospitality Management | THB 1,403,000 total tuition (+ THB 113,200 additional compulsory expenses across the programme) |
| AIHM | Certificate (CIHA) | THB 320,000 total tuition |
| AIHM | Postgraduate Diploma | THB 380,000 total tuition |
| AIHM | EBAS English | THB 84,000 (18-week) / THB 42,000 (8-week) |
| AIHM | BTEC International Level 3 | THB 155,000 total tuition |
Bangkok living costs, for all three campuses:
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Living cost used in the first-year estimate | THB 240,000 per year |
| University-linked hostel/dorm (shared) | THB 2,500β7,000/mo |
| Off-campus studio or shared apartment | THB 6,000β18,000/mo |
| Serviced apartment/condo | THB 20,000+/mo (or half that shared with a flatmate) |
| Total monthly budget | THB 15,000β30,000/mo (US$400β800) |
| First-month setup | THB 30,000β50,000 |
| Transport (BTS/MRT + local) | THB 1,000β3,000/mo |
Bangkok is one of the more affordable big-city study destinations β a full month of living costs less than a single week of NZ, Canada or UK equivalents. AIHM bundles its own Health & Accident Insurance at THB 5,000/semester and Visa Expenses at THB 10,000/semester into its fee schedule; check whether your chosen institution does the same or bills separately. Run your own numbers through the free Master Reckoner rather than trusting a counsellor's mental maths.
English requirements β genuinely lower than NZ or Canada
None of the three requires the IELTS 6.0+ bands typical of NZ, Canada or Malaysian branch campuses. If your English is borderline, this is the single strongest argument for Bangkok.
| Institution | Bachelor's entry | Alternative to IELTS |
|---|---|---|
| RIC Bangkok | IELTS 4.5 / TOEIC 550 / TOEFL iBT 55 / Duolingo 80 / CEFR B1 | Raffles English Placement Test if you have no valid test result |
| GA Siam | IELTS 5.0 overall, no sub-score below 4.5 | Free Pearson Versant Placement Test (minimum overall 50, no sub-skill below 46) |
| AIHM | IELTS 5.5 / TOEFL 525 PBT / 70 iBT / Cambridge B2 First | EBAS in-house English: 18-week (IELTS 4.5β5.5) or 8-week (from IELTS 5.0) |
GA Siam's master's routes ask IELTS 5.5 for the Pre-Master's English course, or IELTS 6.0β6.5 for direct entry to Standard or Fast-Track.
Visa and documents β the part families get wrong
You will apply for a Non-Immigrant ED visa at a Thai embassy or consulate before travel: THB 2,000 single-entry or THB 5,000 multiple-entry. Consulates typically ask for bank statements showing THB 50,000β100,000 equivalent for the visa itself β that is the visa threshold, not a realistic study budget, and confusing the two is the mistake I see most often. The first-year estimate in this guide's calculator uses THB 7,000 for ED visa and renewal costs.
Documents to prepare:
- Offer or acceptance letter from the institution
- Bank statements showing THB 50,000β100,000 equivalent (varies by consulate)
- Attested academic transcripts and certificates, with certified English translation where needed
- English proficiency proof, or booking for the institution's placement test
- Certified passport signature copy β plus a parent's passport copy if you are under 20, which RIC Bangkok requires
- Passport-size photo to institution specification (RIC: 4Γ6cm or digital .JPG)
- 90-day extension paperwork: THB 1,900 per renewal at Thai Immigration, throughout the programme, not only at entry
Two rules that decide whether Thailand works for your family. First, the standard ED visa does not permit employment β working without a permit risks fines, detention and deportation. Institution-run internships built into the curriculum are not the same thing as independent paid work. Second, if a post-study year matters to you, read the question below carefully before you pay a deposit.
More country detail sits on the Thailand hub, and other destination comparisons are on the blog.
Common questions
Is there a post-study work visa in Thailand after a design course?
Not in the way Canada or New Zealand offer one. There is a 1-year post-study stay introduced on 15 July 2024, but it is an extension of the Non-Immigrant ED Plus visa, which the student must already hold and must request at a Thai embassy before entering Thailand β you generally cannot switch from a standard ED visa once inside. Even then it confers no work rights: working requires a job offer, a change to a Non-Immigrant B visa and a separate Ministry of Labour work permit. Only AIHM's own visa guide confirms it offers ED Plus; RIC Bangkok's public pages reference standard ED only, so get written confirmation from RIC admissions before assuming it.
Can I work part-time to cover my costs in Bangkok?
No. The standard ED visa does not permit employment. Plan your funding on the basis that no income arrives during the course, and budget the full THB 15,000β30,000/mo living range plus THB 30,000β50,000 for first-month setup.
Can I transfer from Thailand to another country partway through?
At GA Siam, yes β the 2+2 route moves you to La Trobe University in Australia or University of Victoria in Canada. At AIHM, the Postgraduate Diploma gives direct entry to the final semester of the Les Roches master's in Switzerland or Spain. For RIC Bangkok, cross-network progression is less formally documented β ask admissions to put the route, the campus and the entry point in writing before you enrol.
Is Thailand a serious study destination or just a cheap one?
Thailand's Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation reports international enrolment rising from roughly 40,560 students in 2023 to about 48,000 in the first semester of 2025, with China (24,711) and Myanmar (15,242) as the largest source countries. The growth is real, driven by new dual-degree and transnational partnerships. But the design-specific offering for international students is narrow, so judge the individual programme, not the country.
