Cheapest UK Universities for International Students
Ranked UK universities by published international fees, from £15,700 masters at Bradford — plus living costs, visa costs and English bars for Nepali students.
The short answer
On published fees, the University of Bradford is the cheapest campus-based option in this list: £15,700 for a classroom-based taught masters and £16,100 per year for a classroom-based bachelor's degree, in one of the lowest-cost parts of the UK. University College Birmingham (£16,500 per year Band 1 undergraduate) and Ulster University in Northern Ireland (£17,490 per year undergraduate, £18,310 taught masters) are the next strongest total-cost options.
Tuition is only half of what a Nepali family actually pays. Living costs and the London/non-London line move the total as much as the fee does, so read both tables below before shortlisting.
Cheapest taught masters — ranked by published fee
| # | Institution | Location | Published international fee | London for visa purposes? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arden University (postgraduate, blended) | Manchester | £12,500 | No |
| 2 | Keele — LLM Law with SQE Preparation (Band E) | Keele, Staffordshire | £14,700 | No |
| 3 | Bradford — classroom-based masters | Bradford | £15,700 | No |
| 4 | Keele — Band 0 (e.g. MA History, MSc Social Research) | Keele, Staffordshire | £17,100 | No |
| 5 | University College Birmingham — Band 1 | Birmingham | £17,500 | No |
| 6 | Keele — Band 1 (most business masters and the MBA) | Keele, Staffordshire | £18,200 | No |
| 7 | Ulster — standard taught masters | Belfast / Coleraine / Derry | £18,310 | No |
| 8 | Huddersfield — MA/MSc | Huddersfield | £18,700 | No |
| 9 | Huddersfield London — MSc | London | £18,700 | Yes |
| 10 | St Mary's — MA International Business Management (Jan 2026) | Twickenham | £18,750 | Yes |
| 11 | Plymouth — MSc International Business | Plymouth | £18,950 (2026/27) · £19,500 (2027/28) | No |
| 12 | London Metropolitan University (from) | London | £20,000 | Yes |
| 13 | Gloucestershire — Band A | Cheltenham / Gloucester | £20,190 | No |
Three catches worth saying out loud:
- Arden's £12,500 is the cheapest figure here, and it is a blended/online-focused private provider. Check the delivery mode of the specific programme against what the family is expecting before anyone pays a deposit.
- Keele's £14,700 is one course, the LLM Law with SQE Preparation — not Keele's general price. Most Keele business masters and the MBA sit at £18,200 (keele.ac.uk).
- Huddersfield London charges £18,700 — the same as the Yorkshire campus (london.hud.ac.uk). But the maintenance requirement is London-rate, and that is where the real cost difference lands.
Cheapest bachelor's degrees — ranked by published annual fee
| # | Institution | Location | Fee per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bradford — classroom-based | Bradford | £16,100/yr |
| 2 | University College Birmingham — Band 1 | Birmingham | £16,500/yr |
| 3 | St Mary's — BSc (Hons) Business Management (sampled) | Twickenham, London | £17,100/yr |
| 4 | Ulster — standard undergraduate | Belfast / Coleraine / Derry | £17,490/yr |
| 5 | Huddersfield | Huddersfield | £17,600/yr |
| 5= | Huddersfield London (Business, Int'l Business, Computer Science) | London | £17,600/yr |
| 7 | UCA — BA/BSc (Hons) | Farnham / Canterbury / Epsom / Rochester | £18,000/yr (2026/27) · £19,800/yr (2027/28) |
| 8 | City St George's — BSc Business Economics (sampled) | London | £19,500/yr |
| 9 | Manchester Metropolitan | Manchester | £20,000 – £21,500/yr |
For contrast, the most selective institution in this list, the University of Exeter, publishes £24,900/yr for accounting, finance, business and economics and £31,200/yr for computer science, engineering and biosciences (exeter.ac.uk). Exeter is 11th of 130 in the Complete University Guide 2027 and the only Russell Group member here; Bradford and Gloucestershire sit at 98th=, London Met at 129th. Price and league-table position are not the same decision.
Two undergraduate add-ons that catch families out: Huddersfield charges £3,300 for a work placement year and £19,800/yr for Nursing; MMU charges £1,955 for a sandwich placement year and £1,465 for a year abroad.

| London (UWL, City St George's, St Mary's, Huddersfield London, London Met, Arden London) | £1,483/month | £1,300 – £1,900/month | £800 – £1,300/month |
The "visa minimum" column is the Home Office maintenance requirement and is official. The "realistic" and "rent" columns are sector estimates, not scraped figures — they are there so a family does not budget to the visa floor and then run short in month three. In London the visa floor and the real cost are close; in Bradford, Huddersfield and Belfast the floor is comfortable.
London versus non-London is a Home Office definition tied to the institution's location, not a judgement about how urban a place feels. It is worth £347 a month, so confirm which side of the line the named campus falls on. Epsom and Farnham (UCA) sit in London's cost shadow without being London for visa purposes.
What you must hold in the bank, and the rule that causes refusals
Maintenance is £1,483 per month for a London course and £1,136 per month outside London, for each month of the course up to 9 months — gov.uk publishes those as £13,347 and £10,224 respectively. Nine months is the maximum regardless of course length, and it is in addition to the tuition shown on your CAS.
The 28-day rule is where applications fail. The maintenance amount must be held for 28 consecutive days, and the end of that period must be within 31 days of the visa application date. Money that arrived last week does not count. If the account is in a parent's or relative's name, you need relationship evidence, a consent letter and the sponsor's statements — check whose name the account is in before you submit, not after.
Other fixed costs to budget separately: the student visa fee £558, the Immigration Health Surcharge £1,035 per year, and the TB test £65 (required for Nepalese applicants on courses longer than 6 months, at a UKVI-approved clinic).
One expectation to set at the first meeting: for taught postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, dependants are permitted only on a PhD or other doctorate, a research-based higher degree, or for a government-sponsored student on a course longer than 6 months. A taught MSc, MA or MBA does not qualify.
English requirements at the low-fee institutions
| Institution | Undergraduate | Taught masters |
|---|---|---|
| Bradford | IELTS 6.0, no sub-test below 5.5 | IELTS 6.0, no sub-test below 5.5 (MSc Midwifery Studies 7.0, no sub-test below 6.0) |
| Ulster | IELTS (Academic) 6.0, no band below 5.5 | IELTS (Academic) 6.0, no band below 5.5 (higher on some programmes) |
| Huddersfield | Varies by course — BA (Hons) English needs 6.5, no element below 6.0 | Commonly 6.0, no element below 5.5; MA TESOL 6.5 with no element below 6.0 |
| Huddersfield London | IELTS (Academic) 6.0, no component below 5.5 | IELTS (Academic) 6.0, no component below 5.5 |
| UCB | IELTS (Academic or UKVI) 6.0, no band below 5.5, depending on course | IELTS (Academic or UKVI) 6.0, no band below 5.5, depending on course |
| Keele | IELTS 5.5 with 5.5 in all subtests (Politics & IR course page) | Set per course — check the course page |
| St Mary's | IELTS 6.0, no section below 5.5 | IELTS 6.5, no section below 6.0 |
| London Met | IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each component, for most bachelor degrees | IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each for most, with a published list of exceptions at 6.5 with 6.0 |
| Arden | IELTS 6.0, no element below 5.5, or an equivalent SELT | IELTS 6.0, no element below 5.5 for on-campus UK study |
Three cautions that matter more than the numbers. A course page always overrides a university-wide figure. Arden, Huddersfield London and London Met all state in writing that IELTS Online or the Indicator test is not accepted. And most institutions expire the test at two years — St Mary's measures that to 1 September of the year the programme starts.
London Met and UWL both publish approved national English qualification lists for Nepal, which can save the cost of a test — check before booking IELTS.
Cheap-looking routes that are not cheap
A pathway year is priced separately from the degree it feeds. The University of Liverpool International College Foundation Certificate in Business, Law and Social Sciences is £22,640 and the Pre-Master's in Business, Economics and Finance is £25,210 (kaplanpathways.com). That buys the preparation year only; the family then pays University of Liverpool degree fees for the remaining years. Quote both halves or the total will shock.
University College Birmingham's International Foundation Diploma is £11,000 — the cheapest foundation figure here (ucb.ac.uk).
Fees can also move after acceptance. Plymouth states on its own fees page that the UK Government has announced a possible levy of around 6% on international tuition fee income and that it reserves the right to increase fees if implemented (plymouth.ac.uk). Keele caps any 2026/27 increase at 5% and notifies by 30 April 2026. Ulster charges a separate clinical placement levy of £12,133 on relevant programmes (ulster.ac.uk). And UWL has not yet published its 2026/27 international fees — its course fee sections were confirmed empty on two pages on 1 September 2026 (uwl.ac.uk).

Common questions
Which UK university is genuinely cheapest for a Nepali student overall?
Bradford, on both halves of the equation: £16,100 per year for a classroom-based undergraduate degree and £15,700 for a classroom-based masters, in a region where the realistic living range is £800 – £1,150 per month. Ulster in Northern Ireland is the next strongest total-cost option. Arden Manchester is cheaper on fees at £12,500 for a postgraduate course, but check the delivery mode first.
Does a London campus cost more if the tuition is the same?
Yes. Huddersfield London charges £18,700 for its MSc programmes, the same as Huddersfield in Yorkshire, but the maintenance requirement is £1,483 per month instead of £1,136 per month, and London rent runs £800 – £1,300 per month against £400 – £650 in Bradford or Huddersfield. The tuition line is identical; the total is not.
Can part-time work cover my tuition?
No. Permitted hours depend on course level and whether it is term-time or vacation, and are set on your CAS — read it rather than assuming. At the National Living Wage of £12.71 an hour for those 21 and over, from 1 April 2026, part-time work helps with living costs. A budget that relies on earnings to pay tuition is a budget that will fail.
Will my +2 get me into first year at these universities?
At most institutions in this list, yes — UWL asks 60% or CGPA 2.5/4.0, Ulster asks 60%/GPA 2.8 including 50% in five subjects, and Plymouth asks GPA 2.8. City St George's, University of London does not accept the Nepal school-leaving qualification for Year 1 at all; that student needs a foundation year, A-Levels or the IB. If English is the gap rather than grades, a pathway Foundation Certificate can start from UKVI IELTS 4.0.
