Best UK City for Nepali Students: Cost and Survival Guide

Which UK city is best to survive in for a Nepali student? Compare Bradford, Belfast, Manchester and London on rent, tuition and visa funds.

The short answer

If "survive" means keeping your total cost down, Bradford and Huddersfield in Yorkshire are the strongest combination on this list — the lowest rent band and the lowest tuition — followed by Belfast, Coleraine and Derry in Northern Ireland, which have among the lowest living costs of any UK university city. If "survive" means finding part-time work quickly, Manchester and Birmingham are the better bets, because they are the UK's largest student cities outside London and the job market is correspondingly bigger.

London is the one city where the Home Office maintenance figure and the real cost sit close together. That is not a compliment to London — it means the official floor of £1,483/month is genuinely what you will spend, with no slack.

How to judge a city: two numbers, not one

Families usually compare tuition, then get surprised by rent. The correct comparison is tuition and the monthly living cost in that city, kept as two separate numbers.

The UK visa rule uses only two categories: London and outside London. Outside London the maintenance requirement is £1,136/month for up to 9 months — £10,224. In London it is £1,483/month for up to 9 months — £13,347. That amount is in addition to the tuition shown on your CAS, not instead of it.

The catch: the maintenance floor is the same £1,136 in Belfast as in Manchester, but the actual rent is not. A student in Belfast or Bradford who evidences the floor has breathing room. A student in London who budgets to the floor has none.

City-by-city living costs

The "visa minimum" column below is the official Home Office maintenance requirement. The "realistic" and "rent" columns in our data are estimates built from sector norms, not scraped official figures — they exist so a family does not budget to the visa floor and then run short.

City / area (institutions) Visa minimum Realistic monthly Rent
London (UWL, City St George's, St Mary's, Huddersfield London, London Met, Arden London) £1,483/month £1,300 - £1,900/month £800 - £1,300/month
Manchester (MMU, Arden Manchester) £1,136/month £950 - £1,350/month £550 - £850/month
Birmingham (UCB, Arden Birmingham) £1,136/month £900 - £1,300/month £500 - £800/month
Belfast / Coleraine / Derry (Ulster) £1,136/month £800 - £1,150/month £400 - £700/month
Bradford / Huddersfield £1,136/month £800 - £1,150/month £400 - £650/month
Keele / Staffordshire £1,136/month £800 - £1,150/month £450 - £700/month on campus
Liverpool (UoLIC) £1,136/month £850 - £1,200/month £450 - £700/month
Cheltenham / Gloucester £1,136/month £850 - £1,250/month £450 - £750/month
Plymouth / Exeter / Cornwall £1,136/month £900 - £1,300/month £500 - £850/month
Farnham / Canterbury / Epsom / Rochester (UCA) £1,136/month £950 - £1,400/month £550 - £900/month

Three things worth knowing from that table:

  • Bradford and Huddersfield are the lowest-cost region on this list, and Bradford also has the lowest tuition — the strongest total-cost combination available here.
  • Belfast, Coleraine and Derry have among the lowest living costs of any UK university city. That is a genuine total-cost advantage, not a marketing line.
  • Cheltenham and Gloucester are low cost, but they are small Cotswold towns with a smaller part-time job market than a big city. Cheap rent and no shifts is not a saving.
  • Keele is a self-contained campus, with guaranteed on-campus accommodation if you apply by 30 June for a September start.

Note what the table shows for a student who wants a London postcode: Huddersfield London charges £18,700 for an MSc, the same figure as the Yorkshire campus. The fee is identical; the maintenance requirement and the rent are not.

The London definition catch

London versus non-London is a Home Office definition tied to the institution's location. It is not a judgement about how urban a place feels. Epsom and Farnham (UCA) sit inside London's cost shadow without being in London for visa purposes — so check which campus your offer letter and CAS actually name. Our data puts the difference between the two maintenance rates at £347 a month.

Get this wrong in either direction and it hurts. Evidence the lower amount for a London course and you risk refusal. Assume the higher amount unnecessarily and you tie up family money you did not need to.

Part-time work: useful, but not a plan

Students may work during their studies, with permitted hours depending on the course level and whether it is term-time or vacation. The gov.uk Student visa page sets this per case, so confirm against your specific CAS rather than assuming the familiar 20-hour figure.

The National Living Wage is £12.71/hour for those aged 21 and over, from 1 April 2026. For 18 to 20 it is £10.85/hour.

Part-time work helps with living costs. It does not pay UK tuition. A family that budgets as though it will has mis-budgeted, and that is a very common mistake. This is also why Manchester and Birmingham deserve a look even though their rent is higher than Bradford's — Birmingham in particular has a strong hospitality job market, which matters for UCB students.

The other costs nobody puts in the city comparison

These apply wherever you study:

Item Amount
Student visa application (outside the UK) £558
Student visa extend / switch (inside the UK) £558
Immigration Health Surcharge £1,035 per year of stay
TB test £65
Maintenance — London £1,483/month, max 9 months = £13,347
Maintenance — outside London £1,136/month, max 9 months = £10,224

A TB certificate from a UKVI-approved clinic is required for Nepalese applicants on courses longer than 6 months. Book it before the visa application, not after.

And the refusal point that has nothing to do with which city you pick: the maintenance money must sit in the account for 28 consecutive days, and the end of that 28-day period must be within 31 days of the visa application date. The account must be in the student's name or a permitted sponsor's. Financial evidence is the most common point of refusal. Prepare the statements around the application date, not months in advance.

Common questions

Which UK city is cheapest overall for a Nepali student?

Bradford, on both halves of the equation — £16,100 for a classroom-based undergraduate year and £15,700 for a classroom-based master's, in one of the lowest-cost parts of the UK. Ulster in Northern Ireland is the next strongest total-cost option, with rent in the £400 - £700/month estimate band. Keep tuition and living costs as two separate numbers when you compare, rather than merging them.

Is it cheaper to study in London if the tuition fee is the same?

No. Huddersfield London charges £18,700 for an MSc, the same as the Yorkshire campus, but a London course requires £1,483/month of maintenance instead of £1,136/month, and rent in London is estimated at £800 - £1,300/month against £400 - £650/month in Bradford or Huddersfield. The fee being equal is exactly why the living cost decides it.

Can I find part-time work more easily in a small town?

Generally no. Manchester is the UK's largest student city outside London with correspondingly good part-time work availability, and Birmingham is the second-largest UK city with a strong hospitality job market. Small towns such as Cheltenham and Gloucester have lower rent but a smaller part-time job market. Weigh the rent saving against how many hours you are realistically likely to get.

Does picking a cheaper city reduce what I need in the bank?

Only if the institution is outside London for Home Office purposes. The maintenance requirement is a flat £1,136/month outside London — it is the same in Belfast as in Manchester, regardless of actual rent. Choosing a low-rent city does not lower the evidenced amount; it lowers what you actually spend once you arrive.
