Actuarial Science & Statistics Scholarships UK: Nepal Guide

How Nepali students get a full or partial scholarship for actuarial science or statistics in the UK — real award amounts, fees, deadlines and the catches.

The short answer

For taught actuarial science and statistics courses, a full scholarship that covers tuition plus living costs is not what UK universities publish — the published awards in the sources compiled here are partial tuition reductions, from £1,000 up to £7,500. The realistic plan for a Nepali student is to stack a partial merit award with an early-payment discount, and then cut the total by choosing a lower-fee university in a lower-cost city, because the saving from that choice is usually larger than the scholarship itself.

Before anything else: check that the university actually runs the course you want. The institutions listed below are the ones covered in this module, and not all of them teach actuarial science or statistics. Use the Master Reckoner to match subject, entry requirement and English level first, then come back to the funding.

What is actually on offer, and to whom

Two honest cautions before you read the table. First, several of the biggest awards are payment-driven, not merit-driven — UWL's Early Settlement Discount, UCA's £1,000, Plymouth's £500 and Huddersfield London's £500 all require the family to pay early. That is a cash-flow decision, not an academic achievement. Second, where an amount is shown as "published on the … page", the institution advertises a scheme but the page did not carry a figure. Do not let an agent quote you a number for those. Ask for the link.

The conditions that decide whether you get one

  • Ulster's Global Excellence Scholarship asks for the equivalent of UK A-Level BBB or above, and is not applicable to a placement year. The Standard Country Scholarship goes to applicants who have achieved the entry requirements for the programme, also excluding a placement year (ulster.ac.uk).
  • UCB's Early Action Scholarship is for international students who meet all deposit deadlines. Miss the deposit date and the award goes, regardless of your grades.
  • Huddersfield London's top merit band needs AAB UK A-level equivalent; the £500 Early Payment Discount is for undergraduates paying the CAS deposit by 31 May 2026 for the September 2026 intake (london.hud.ac.uk).
  • UWL's Early Settlement Discount requires the full tuition balance for the academic year to be paid on or before the stated enrolment date, and does not apply to fees of £250 or less, single modules, or courses under 30 teaching weeks (uwl.ac.uk).
  • UCA's £1,000 applies to non-EU international students paying full tuition (after scholarships) before or at CAS issuance (uca.ac.uk). The £2,000 Postgrad Solutions bursaries for 2026 entry are applied for through the Postgrad Solutions website, not UCA.
  • Plymouth's £500 requires first-year tuition paid in full by Friday 4 September 2026 (plymouth.ac.uk).
  • Arden's 25% regional fee reduction on undergraduate programmes applies to students from selected regions. Confirm Nepal is a listed region before anyone quotes it to you.

Cutting the total beats chasing the award

A £3,000 postgraduate scholarship is useful. Choosing a cheaper university in a cheaper city moves more money. Look at these two columns side by side and do the sum yourself.

Course and institution Tuition Living costs in that city
Master's — Bradford, classroom-based £15,700 Visa minimum £1,136/month; rent £400–£650/month
Master's — Ulster, standard taught £18,310 Visa minimum £1,136/month; rent £400–£700/month
Master's — Keele Band 1 £18,200 Visa minimum £1,136/month; rent £450–£700/month on campus
Master's — Huddersfield (Yorkshire) £18,700 Visa minimum £1,136/month; rent £400–£650/month
Master's — Huddersfield LONDON £18,700 Visa minimum £1,483/month; rent £800–£1,300/month
Master's — London Met (from) £20,000 Visa minimum £1,483/month; rent £800–£1,300/month
Bachelor's — Bradford, classroom-based £16,100 per year Visa minimum £1,136/month; rent £400–£650/month
Bachelor's — Ulster £17,490 per year Visa minimum £1,136/month; rent £400–£700/month
Bachelor's — Exeter science/engineering £31,200 per year Visa minimum £1,136/month; rent £500–£850/month
Pre-Master's — UoLIC (Business/Economics/Finance) £25,210 Visa minimum £1,136/month; rent £450–£700/month

The "visa minimum" is the Home Office maintenance requirement and is official. The rent ranges are sector estimates, not scraped figures — they exist so a family does not budget to the visa floor and run short. London versus non-London is a Home Office definition tied to the institution's location, not how urban the place feels, and it is worth £347 a month. Confirm which side of the line your specific campus falls on. More destination detail sits on the UK hub.

The money the visa checks, separately from the scholarship

A scholarship reduces the fee shown on your CAS. It does not remove the maintenance requirement.

  • Maintenance is £1,483 per month for London and £1,136 per month outside London, for up to 9 months = £13,347 or £10,224 (gov.uk Student visa). Nine months is the maximum regardless of course length, and it is in addition to the tuition on the CAS.
  • The money must be held for 28 consecutive days, and the end of that period must be within 31 days of the visa application date. This is the single most common refusal point we see from Nepal.
  • Other set costs: visa fee £558, Immigration Health Surcharge £1,035 per year, TB test £65. The TB certificate is required for Nepalese applicants on courses longer than 6 months, from a UKVI-approved clinic.
  • If the funds are not in the student's own name, you need relationship evidence, the sponsor's consent letter and the sponsor's bank statements. Check whose name the account is in before you submit, not after.

A partial scholarship letter does not reduce the maintenance figure. Families sometimes assume it does, and that assumption causes refusals.

Order of work, if you want the best chance

  1. Fix the subject and the entry level first. For most institutions here, NEB +2 gets you into Year 1 — the common bar is about 60% or GPA 2.5–2.8. But City St George's, University of London does not accept the Nepal school-leaving qualification for Year 1 at all; that student needs a foundation year, A-Levels or the IB (citystgeorges.ac.uk).
  2. Apply early. Merit awards at Ulster and Huddersfield London key off grades; UCB's keys off meeting deposit deadlines. Both reward early applicants.
  3. Get the English evidence right. IELTS, PTE or TOEFL as the course requires, or an approved national qualification where the institution accepts one — London Met and UWL both publish approved lists for Nepal.
  4. Ask the admissions office, in writing, whether awards stack. Whether a merit scholarship and an early-payment discount can be combined is an institution-level rule. Get it in an email before you pay anything.
  5. Decide the early-payment question as a family. Paying a year's tuition upfront to secure £500 is a cash-flow choice. If that money is a loan, count the cost of the loan.

Common questions

Is there a full scholarship for actuarial science in the UK for Nepali students?

Nothing in the sources compiled for this page publishes a full scholarship covering tuition and living costs for a taught actuarial science or statistics degree. The published awards are partial tuition reductions, the largest here being £7,500 towards one year of an undergraduate degree and £7,000 towards one year of a postgraduate degree, both through UoLIC pathway routes. Treat any agent promising a "full scholarship" for a taught masters as a claim to verify against the university's own page.

Can I combine a merit scholarship with an early-payment discount?

Sometimes, but it is an institution-level rule and you must confirm it in writing. Note that UWL's Early Settlement Discount does not apply to fees of £250 or less, single modules, or courses under 30 teaching weeks, and Ulster's two scholarships are not applicable to a placement year. Read the exclusions before you plan around the money.

Will a scholarship reduce the bank balance I need for the visa?

No. Maintenance is £1,483 per month for London or £1,136 per month elsewhere, for up to 9 months = £13,347 or £10,224, and it sits on top of the tuition shown on your CAS. A scholarship lowers the CAS fee; the maintenance figure is unchanged. The 28-day holding rule still applies in full.

Can I bring my spouse while I study a masters in statistics?

No. For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, dependants are permitted only on a PhD or other doctorate, a research-based higher degree, or for a government-sponsored student on a course longer than 6 months. A taught MSc does not qualify. Raise this at the first counselling meeting — it is the most common broken expectation we see.

How long can I work in the UK after the course?

It depends on your application date, not your course date. A bachelor's or master's graduate applying on or before 31 December 2026 gets 2 years; from 1 January 2027 it is 18 months; doctorates get 3 years (gov.uk). A student starting a one-year masters in September 2026 finishes in late 2027 and therefore falls into the 18-month regime.
